SALVADOR : MUSEU AFRO-BRASILEIRO

by swesn

Museu Afro-Brasileiro contains exhibits displaying the cultural influences from Africa to Brazil. Unfortunately, the exhibits' explanations are written only in Portuguese but don't let that stop you.The exhibits include many items representing the various African gods, called 'orixas', as well. And there were also photographs depicting the items in use, or during Candomble ceremonies. There are many differences from the origins of the 'orixas' in Africa to how they were adapted here in Brazil. The exhibits show the costumes and implements used by the various 'orixas' and is quite informative for you to 'understand' a bit more of what you see if you are going to a Candomble ceremony. There is also an exhibit of 27 wooden panels carved by Argentine artist Hector Julio Paride Benabo, called the Carybe which showed the various 'orixas', their special representative implements and animals. Very...

SALVADOR : CANDOMBLE

by swesn

When I was in Salvador in 2002, there were not many obvious Candomble tours offered. But this time round, in 2005, Candomble tours are now offered everywhere and there are touts approaching tourists as well. Candomblé is a religion with African origins and worships a number of gods or spirits, derived from African deities.During the ceremony, several dancers would gather in the centre of the courtyard and make small movements with their hands and feet and dance to the various beats of the drums. This carries on for quite a while and the crowd attending the ceremony usually joins in, clapping and singing in the Yoruba (or other) language with fervour. At one point, some of these dancers would fall into a trance, being 'possessed' by one of the different 'orixas' (deities). These would be dressed in special costumes (really gorgeous costumes... so this is the best part to watch) and carry...

SALVADOR : PARTIES EVERY TUESDAYS AND WEEKENDS

by swesn

Salvador, as I have said, is a party-town. While nearly every night can be party-night here, the authorities - themselves party animals - actually organised special street parties on weekend and TUESDAY nights.During these nights, stages, food and drink stalls are set up at the various squares - Largo do Pelourinho and Largo Terreiro do Jesus, for sure - and the party starts early. From 8pm onwards, there ought to be some bands playing away, and locals should start hip-swaying and forro-dancing somewhere soon. Then, as the night progresses, the streets heat up with more and more people gathering to join the Olodum drummers, following them behind like Pipe Piper, and dancing crazily away to very vigorous beats. Nearly every alley-way is crammed with people hanging out, dancing and listening to great music. Sometimes, there are concerts somewhere. Simple local bars become very crowded,...

RIO DE JANEIRO: 'BONDINHO' UP SANTA TERESA

by swesn

Riding the 'bonindho' or tram (trolley-car) up Santa Teresa is a fun and cheap experience. Cheaper, if you just hang on to the side of the tram because those at the side do not need to pay the R0.60 fare. The station is found near the conical Main Cathedral called Candelária. The tram passes through the high-arched former aqueducts over Lapa region ('Arcos de Lapa') and you get a fantastic view of Rio de Janeiro from up here, if you are sitting or hanging by the side. Then, the tram meanders up the Santa Teresa hill, passing pretty and lovely colonial houses. It is difficult to decide when to get off. Often, people say the area further up is the 'favela' area and hence, considered dangerous.Well, personally, I recommend you take the tram up til the final stop where it stops and prepares to make an about-turn. Beyond this stop is indeed the start of the 'favela', but I guess if you are game...

RIO DE JANEIRO: NOSTALGIC GRAND STYLE

by swesn

Rio de Janeiro is often known for its beach, samba and party life, not so much for its nostalgia. So, that's why, for another view of Rio de Janeiro, I recommend you to drop by the area around the Cinelandia metro station. Here, you can find the stunning Teatro Municipal, the National Library and the 1920s-or-some-era-of-that-sort grand old-style Cinema Odeon. This area was probably the centre of political and cultural prominence way back in the good old days of Rio de Janeiro when it was the capital of Brazil... and even of the Portuguese Empire. Way way back.Catch a movie, if you can, at Cinema Odeon, or even a performance at the Teatro Municipal... or simply come here in the evening and hang out at one of the restaurants nearby.

RIO DE JANEIRO: WATCH SUNSET AT URCA

by swesn

OK, to view sunset over the horizon in Brazil is a nearly impossible task... but I found a place up north for it. More of that later...But elsewhere in Brazil, you can only settle for sunset behind some buildings or, in Rio de Janeiro's case, some mountains.Urca is a peninsula that juts out on the extreme east of Rio de Janeiro where the famous and magnificent Sugar Loaf Mountain sits.On the western side, there is a coastline with boats and some residential houses. Now, head there in the evening and turn back and face Corcovado. There, you will see the lovely orange background silhouetting the other famous mountain of Rio de Janeiro with Christ Redeemer.

RIO DE JANEIRO : LAPA ON WEEKEND NIGHTS

by swesn

On Friday or Saturday nights, make your way to the area around Lapa.Under the arch where the Santa Teresa tram goes by, around 10pm and later, there should be a gathering of people there, making music, selling alcohol, sparring 'capoeira'... Follow the music and head towards a area of narrow streets which is made up of very basic local pubs (of plastic chairs, no decorations whatsoever). Street stalls are set up along this street dispensing food. Guys with an ice-box become instant bars, selling a lot of 'cachaca'. Happy people gather here and make music, just because. Watch, wriggle, sweat, squeeze, dance, drink...This is absolutely an open bar, casually self-organised by the party-loving 'cariocas' themselves. An amazing atmosphere, you have to be here!!Try and go with a friend from Rio.

Plataforma Show

by kartik1000

I think this should not be missed, especially if you are there for only a couple of days. It's been labelled as being too touristy, but it's not just a samba show. There's also folklore dancing (Capoeira), Macumba Rhythmists, Salsa and other cultural performances from all parts of the country. It's a great way to see such a variety of performances in a short time.
