by acemj If you follow the same itinerary that I did (Rio-Salvador-Iguacu) you won't have any trouble finding internet points in which to stay connected to friends and family overseas. Be prepared however, for sometimes intermittent and slow connections. As always, it's good to stay in touch, but try not to get trapped wasting away too much of your valuable vacation time doing something you could be doing once you get back home. Leave a Comment

Favela in Brazil... by mangueirense One of the biggest tourist traps in Brazil, in my opinion is doing the 'Favela tour'. It's a guided tour inside a favela (shanty town). I believe that there are not only such kind of tours in Rio de Janeiro, I guess maybe in other places of Brazil it is even so possible to do it...because at least everywhere you will find those favelas. I believe people can be curious about how people live in a slum, but visiting it like visiting a zoo, sounds a bit strange for me !!! I have never done this in any place of Brazil nor will I ever do it!!! The poor and poorer favelas can be very dangerous. Drug dealing is common and popular amongst the poorest of the favelas. The crime rate is very high in these places. The poor sell drugs to the poorer and it is an endless chain. I reccomend only seeing them from far.
If you still are interested in such kind of "Favela Tour" please never go yourself there or trust anybody you knew a few hours before who wants to show you around.... it is like a self-suicide!!! If you are really interested to see how the poor are living there, then please contact a Tour Operator and go there within a group! For those of you who understand to read in portuguese you can have a look at the Favela's Webpage: http://www.vivafavela.com.brr /> For the people who are interested in the biggest Favela in Southamerica called "Rocinha" in Rio: http://www.rocinha.com.br Leave a Comment

Sia Mariana Bay,Cuiaba by janaina 1.Don't be surprised if you see people carrying their tape deks when leaving their cars -thefts from cars are VERY commom, than we just have to take it everywhere with us!! 2.Don't expect to find topless girls all over the beaches-even in the famous beaches in Rio are a bit staid in this respect-if it's important to you,try the sands near Buzius! 3.Finally and of course:Don't walk around carrying extremely expensive cameras, changing currency at the corners, jewelry or your Breitling/Raymond Weil/Tag Heuer,etc..watches,unless you want to be the target!! a dune jump,Fortaleza by janaina DO'S: 1.Do try to visit both,Southern & Northern areas-at times, they seem to be diferent countries! 2.Do remeber that Brazilian language is PORTUGUESE not SPANISH!Try to learn at last few words(at Martinelli's Brazil page you can find a small surviving dictionary,go and check out!!) 3.Do try to go to a soccer game-it's a quite spectable, with flags, dancing, cheering and singing-Brazilians consider our players THE BEST IN THE WORLD and we take the sport VERY SERIOUSLY!! :-)) 4.Do keep a photocopy of your passport on hands, specially for shopping and because of robery,I don't recomend you to walk in the streets carrying the real one all the time! 5.Do retain safe your immigration permission because if lost,it's a mass at the airport, border police will make you a lot of troubles! 6.DO BE CAREFULLY WHEN CROSSING THE STREETS(I heard only the Italian drivers can be worst than us..lol)-at intersections, drivers start full speed at yellow light,ALWAYS before or after red/green. For us,red light means only that only five seconds of right-of-way remain, making for an exciting 10-15 seconds overlap!!In general traffic is chaotic and fast!! Leave a Comment

Itatiaia National Park by janaina First of all an universal warning:make sure your food and drinking water are safe! Malaria:it's a preventable infection that can be fatal if left untreated-prevent malaria by taking prescription antimalarial drugs and protecting yourself against mosquitos bites. This disease is common is SOME urban areas and MAJOR rural areas!Of course if you plann a trip to Amazonas or Pantanal you should consider(seriously) this vacine. See your doctor or health center AT LEAST 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow time for imunizations to take effect!! HEPATITES A OR IMUNO GLOBULIN(IG) and HEPATITES B(the last one if you might be exposed to blood, have sexual contacts with locals, stay more than 6 months or be exposed through medical treatment)are also highly recomended(I just recovered now from a serious hepatites A that I have no idea how I took it-water,food or God knows what). YELLOW FEVER VACINATION:if you will be traveling OUTSIDE urban areas! To stay healthy I recomend:drink bottled water avoid drinking fountain water or from rivers or lakes or cascades,etc.. Wash extremely good your fruits and vegetables, and if you like, peel it! Protect yourself against mosquitos bites, specially in rural areas or Northern areas:use repellents, which I recomend applied sparingly at 4-hours intervals. If you are not sure, don't drink beverages with ice cubes, and in some areas, avoid eating from street vendors. I don't recomend hugging monkeys or wild animals, unless with a guide-they bite and can infect you with rabies!! Another malaria tip:you'd been in an area with high risk for malaria, keep taking your medication(antimalarian)for more 4 weeks after leaving Brazil-IF YOU BECOME ILL WITH A FEVER-even as long as an year after your trip-tell your doctor you'd been to a high risk malarian area!! Some of these tips were taken from Brazil Health Ministry. Leave a Comment

an old neighborhood,Joao Pessoa by janaina This tip is here in order to prevent you for surprises: PASSPORT/VISA REQUIRES:Passport, visa, proof of onward passage and enough funds are required for citizens from Canada and the USA.Passports must be valid for 6 months AFTER date of arrival(if you have a passport which is balid only for the next 2 months, let's say,and you intend to stay for 3 months IT'S NOT OK-I'm clearing this because of numerous postings at the forum regarding this kind of question-even for other countries!) VISA PAYMENT:I don't have any idea how much a tourist must pay for a visa out of Brazil, but I heard Brazilian visas are expensive-tourism is one of our major economic budget, and besides,I don't remeber traveling to any country and being free of paying for a visa-than just accept it's the way it's! HEALTH CERTIFICATES:Yellow-fever certificates are required from those arriving from infected areas and endemic zones. TIME ZONE:2-5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time(-2 through -5 GMT).Daylight saving time is observed in Brazil. TIPPING:tipping the waiter is not necessary as most restaurants include a 10% gratuity in the bill.Don't tip taxi drivers, except in Rio, where 10% is normal. Airport and hotel porters should get the equivalent of US$1 per bag. VACINATIONS WILL BE EXPLAINED NEXT Leave a Comment

by selfishman My roommates paid $30 USD each way for a cab ride to downtown for the samba parade. I paid $0.75 for two roundtrip tickets on the subway and we got there faster than my roommates.
You Have to take cabs some places in Rio but you could save yourself a lot of time and money by taking the subway. It's new, very clean, and relatively safe.
I don't have train schedule info but with a little bit of research I'm sure it's not hard to find. I actually didn't even know there was a subway in Rio until a couple days before I left. Leave a Comment

by martinelli GESTURES ::: This is very similar to the American OK, but it's VERY obscene! It means 'screw you' like the gesture in the picture above. More tips on Brazilian gestures, please go to : http://www.maria-brazil.org/gestures.htm . Leave a Comment

This should be obvious but ALWAYS watch your personal belongings. You will be distracted by beggar children while someone steals your wallet or camera. Also, if you've got a car never ever leave anything lying on the seat next to you. They will definitely be too tempting to resist! Always carry some money with you so if you're mugged you have something to give them. Leave a Comment
