DO'S AND DON'TS IN BRAZIL

by janaina

DO'S:1.Do try to visit both,Southern & Northern areas-at times, they seem to be diferent countries!2.Do remeber that Brazilian language is PORTUGUESE not SPANISH!Try to learn at last few words(at Martinelli's Brazil page youcan find a small surviving dictionary,go and check out!!)3.Do try to go to a soccer game-it's a quite spectable, with flags, dancing, cheering and singing-Brazilians consider our players THE BEST IN THE WORLD and we take the sport VERY SERIOUSLY!! :-))4.Do keep a photocopy of your passport on hands, specially for shopping and because ofrobery,I don't recomend you to walk in the streets carrying the real one all the time!5.Do retain safe your immigration permission because if lost,it's a mass at the airport, border police will make you a lot of troubles!6.DO BE CAREFULLY WHEN CROSSING THE STREETS(I heard only the Italian drivers can be worst than us..lol)-at...

VACINATIONS

by janaina

First of all an universal warning:make sure your food and drinking water are safe!Malaria:it's a preventable infection that can be fatal if left untreated-prevent malaria by taking prescription antimalarial drugs and protecting yourself against mosquitos bites. This disease is common is SOME urban areas and MAJOR rural areas!Of course if you plann a trip to Amazonas or Pantanal you should consider(seriously) this vacine.See your doctor or health center AT LEAST 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow time for imunizations to take effect!!HEPATITES A OR IMUNO GLOBULIN(IG) andHEPATITES B(the last one if you might be exposed to blood, have sexual contacts with locals, stay more than 6 months or be exposed throughmedical treatment)are also highly recomended(I just recovered now from a serious hepatites A that I have no idea how I took it-water,food or God knows what).YELLOW FEVER VACINATION:if you...

ESSENTIALS

by janaina

This tip is here in order to prevent you for surprises:PASSPORT/VISA REQUIRES:Passport, visa, proof of onward passage and enough funds are required for citizens from Canada and the USA.Passports must be valid for 6 months AFTER date of arrival(if you have a passport which is balid only for the next 2 months, let's say,and you intend to stay for 3 months IT'S NOT OK-I'm clearing this because of numerous postings at the forum regarding this kind of question-even for other countries!)VISA PAYMENT:I don't have any idea how much a tourist must pay for a visa out of Brazil, but I heard Brazilian visas are expensive-tourism is one of our major economic budget, and besides,I don't remeber traveling to any country and being free of paying for a visa-than just accept it's the way it's!HEALTH CERTIFICATES:Yellow-fever certificates are required from those arriving from infected areas and endemic...

GESTURES ::: This is very similar to the American OK, but it's VERY obscene! It means 'screw you' like the gesture in the picture above. More tips on Brazilian gestures, please go to : http://www.maria-brazil.org/gestures.htm .

Pelhourinho (Salvador, Bahia) Photo Scam

by Raunchy_Poet

In an old square in Pelhourinho, 3 ladies in full Bahia regalia (very full dresses, probably supported by hoops) asked if I'd like my photo taken with them.I claim that I'm rarely naive, but my 'scam' antenna must've been dulled by the heat, or by the sight of other Brazilian women wearing a lot, lot less ... aaah! But back to the plot ...After the photo, they demanded quite a sum of money, even getting a little menacing (well, you try being surrounded by 3 women pressing their hoops into you!)I handed them a fraction of the amount, in enough notes and coins to distract them while I legged it. Negotiate a price up-front, or just say no, or ... sell them your presence in their photo!

This should be obvious but ALWAYS watch your personal belongings. You will be distracted by beggar children while someone steals your wallet or camera. Also, if you've got a car never ever leave anything lying on the seat next to you. They will definitely be too tempting to resist! Always carry some money with you so if you're mugged you have something to give them.

Copacabana night's life: take...

Copacabana night's life: take care - most of the dancing clubs are prostitution houses !!Pickpockets: never carry your camera in your neck. Take care of your things and if you are in the beaches and want to swimm, ask the most friendly person seated close to you in the sand to care of your things while you are swimming. It works, trust me ! (Specially if you ask someone who is with kids..)Taxi drivers: in Rio de Janeiro, never get the cabs parked in front of Rio Sul's mall. They don't know the word honesty...

by robynisa

since the pelourinho is so full of tourists you will be swamped by children selling things on the street. it's a difficult situation as you want to be nice, but sometimes you have to be very certain with your 'no's' as some of them will follow you around for quite some time pestering you to buy something. a friend of mine had one of the sellers just put a necklace around her daughter's neck wihtout saying anything-then asked for money. when she gave the necklace back he followed her for the next hour, coming into the restaurant she ate in and everything. she didn't get rid of him until she got on the bus to leave.

Well its not really a tourist...

by yubali

Well its not really a tourist trap... anyhow, all the books say that in salvador, the most lively part, with all that parties and fun, is Barra. that problem is that from some reason they dont consider the fact that some people will be in brasil off the carnaval season, and off the carnaval season, Barra is a BORING, 'DEAD', NOTHING TO DO, part of salvador. off the carnaval season, all the action occur in Pelorinho.
