    buses in Brazil

I would say that it is not dangerous travelling by bus in Brazil, ....even if we hear sometimes about some exclusions....but of course you should take some security-precautions even here:

    - as most of the buses does make a little break of between 15-30 minutes every 2-3 hours at big stations/combined usually with huge supermarkets/lanchonetes to get new fuel and resting time for the passengers, I would recommend you -if you go outside the bus to go to the toilet or to eat something- to take all your important belongings with you, like your handbag with money, passport, credit-cards, tickets, etc....never let this things alone in the bus, because there's always a good chance that someone in the same bus -or maybe another person- noticed that you are a tourist and sometimes they try to take this things away...
    - make sure that you have the bus-number of your bus (usually they have a little sign with the bus number and destination on the window in front) in mind or notice it,...because usually they are a lot of buses making their stop at this stations, and sometims it is a little difficult to find the right bus again, especially at night!
    - would recommend you to only take your handbag with the most important belongings (money, ticket, passport, credit card, camera, etc.) with you inside the bus, ...your other luggage like suitcase or backpack give to the driver to put it in the luggage-case under the bus...this place is probably the safest for your baggage during the journey, because when you want to get your baggage back you have usually to give the little paper with a number back to the driver he gaves you when he received your luggage...so normally no other person than the driver or you can take the luggage away there..

    International Flights to Brazil

International flights into Brazil generally land at both Rio de Janeiro(GIG) and São Paulo(GRU). Prices are more competitive during the low season but cheap flights can be very difficult to find during the high season (generally between 15. December and 15. January, the Thursday before Carnival to the Saturday after Carnival and 15. June to 15. August). Flight frequency changes regularly and you are advised to check current timetables.

    From Europe:

Brazilian biggest and most known Airline VARIG in cooperation with LUFTHANSA serves Frankfurt-Rio and Frankfurt-Sao Paulo every day nonstop, flights leave at 22:30 at night to Rio (GIG) and at 22:05 to Sao Paulo (GRU).

From Europe Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are connected to the principal European cities direct by most of the major European airlines and the main Brazilian airline, Varig (from Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Lisbon, Paris and Milan). Varig also flies to Recife and Fortaleza from Milan, and to Salvador from Rome.

From North America and Canada Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are connected to the USA direct by American Airlines (Chicago, Dallas, Miami), Continental (New York), Delta (Atlanta), TAM (Miami), Transbrasil (Miami, New York, Orlando and Washington), United Airlines (Chicago, Miami), Varig (Los Angeles, Miami and New York) and Vasp. Other US gateways are Boston, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit and San Francisco. The cheapest routes are from Miami. Canadian Airlines fly direct to São Paulo from Toronto.

Time tables for the departures in worldwide cities and arrivals in Brazil you can see under the link "Time Table" at:

Rent a Used Car in Big Cities

Here is an interesting idea for the adventurous. In Rio de Janeiro and other large cities, there is a second tier of car rental places, that rent used cars - ones that have 50,000 km or more on the odometer. I have done this several times, and found it a very good way to get around at a fraction of the price of a first rate rental place. The cars are pretty simple, such as 2-dr Fiat Palios with a 1.0 L engine, no air conditioning, and plastic seats and rubber floor mats. These cars are great to take to the beach, as sand will not damage them. The cost is on the order or US$20 per day with unlimited miles, which is a fraction of the cost of a Hertz or Localiza in Brazil, as they are quite expensive.

I rented from Loca-Nit in Rio de Janeiro, which is associated with Allocar. Loca-Nit is located on 254 A Princesa Isabel in Copacabana (Princesa Isabel is the main street between Botafogo and Copacabana).

Beware of the highways of Brasil, as they can be hazardous, especially at night.

As far as safety in the air is concerned, I would compare Brazilian airlines, especially Varig, Tam, and Nordeste. VASP has a slightly worse reputation, but I still consider their service quite good.

I would compare equipment and general safety of the Brazilian airlines very favorably with those of the so called 1st world countries. The planes are new and well maintained.

On a Brazilian airline you are always served a meal. No peanut flights like Southwest Airlines in the USA, as the airline personnel is always professional, helpful, and courteous.

I have never lost a piece of luggage on a flight in Brazil, adn I have flown dozens of times. I cannot say the same for Continental airlines int he states.

The best way to blend into (or try to) one's culture is learning their language. Are you staying just for a couple days? For a whole month? Well, why not having portuguese classes???
Flexible method, all material provided, grammar, history, culture, music, arts in general. All that for the best price in town: R$ 15 (about 7 dollars) an hour.

  • Renting a car:
Even the big Companies like AVIS, Localiza etc. are franchise companies. This means if you want to return the car in an other city you must pay for the return (ca 0,30 R$ per km).
You should also make a good insurance because driving on brasilian roads is dangerous.
If you don´t speak a good portugues, it is better to rent the car from your county.

  • Roads in Brasil:
the roads in brasil are different, depending on the state. The poorer states of the northeast and the north do not spend much money for their roads. So you´ll find big holes in the street without any warning.
To some places the only way is a sandroad.
Also the traffic is dangerous. Brasilian drivers are crazy, especially the truckdrivers.
If you really want to drive, be carefull.

  • Best way to get there, by plane! *

Depending on how much travel you will be doing in Brazil, get an Airpass from Transbrasil, TAM or Varig. They're the best way to see more of Brazil for the buck.*

Brazil is a big country and if your time is limited then flying is a good option.
An airpass can save you a lot of money if you plan to fly more than one stretch while in Brazil.
The airline TAM is at the moment the airline with the best airpass.
You will need to book an airpass in advance so make sure not to leave that unril your arrival or you will end up paying more money for your tickets.
