Order of cost of transport

by peace_prevails

Basically, unless you buy an AirPass outside of Brazil, forget about buying plane tickets while there. Busses are nicer than in the States in Brazil and an efficient way to travel. Have not tried hitchiking, but hear that it is safe in some places (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina).Train transporation is almost non-existent in Brazil except in the south there is a train from Curitiba to the coast. In São Paulo, the Metrô (subway) is the best way to get around and in Rio, you are probably best off with a Taxi Commum (one of the yellow ones). Curitiba has the best public bussing system in the world (for real).

train

by pepples46

by Airplane..but some prefer a Cruise to and from Brasil, or other commercial Shipsall mayor Airlines fly to Brasil, VARIG the biggest bras. Airlinekind of Greyhound Coaches going around Brasil - but be aware: it's cheap, but also very draining..check out theTrain's..from Sao Paulo to Corumba on the bolivian border..great ride through the Pantanal..very comfy and affordable!!down in the south of Brasil, some nice train rides from Porto Alegre are possible.unfortunatly, as in many other countries, Brasil has layed off many its railsystem, which is actually a shame..well the old steamers and coughers are out of work now, but it was fun and cheap.

REAL Bus

by Moloney

When getting the REALBUS from Rio International Airport to the city, beware. The same misfortune befell me not once but TWICE. On boarding the bus I asked the driver to let me off at Botafogo. In the first instance I showed him a piece of paper with the words "Botofogo Praia Shopping" ie. my destination. I kind of thought that he would be able to guess that this was where I wanted to go. No chance. It wasn't until 2 hours later when the bus had reached the opposite terminal when I realised that I was miles from my destination. Well I just had to stay on the confounded bus to make the return journey to the airport during which I jumped off at Botafogo. (The driver by now, had realised where I wanted to go). This kind of thing happened to me not once but TWICE. The 2nd instance occured at the tail-end of my holiday. On arriving back in Rio my portugese had improved considerably in the...

Leito - Sao Paulo - Iguacu

by worldcam

Took my first LEITO this past trip to Brasil. A 16 hour trek from Sao Paulo to Foz do Iguacu. At first glance, the 16 hour length scared me to death -- that's a long time to be on a bus. However, the long distance bus service on this route was great (as long as you can sleep on a moving vehicle) The bus was laid out with 3 seat rows with about 10 rows in the bus. The seats were wide and very comfortable. They laid down almost flat and made for a rather comfortable "bed" for the trip. One caution -- it can be cool as the Air Conditioning is chilly! It did only take 1.5 hours to fly back to SP though....and the cost was almost the same. But the Leito was a good experience.

Transportation in Rio

by HansWerner

You can go in Rio by foot, bike, motorbike, car, taxi or metro. If you go by taxi you can chose a fixed price or you can chose a taxi with taximeter. The one with a taximeter are the yellow cabs. The fixed price from the international airport to Copacabana is at the moment 60 $Rs. The fixed price from the "Rodoviaria Novo Rio" http://www.novorio.com.br/, the main bus station in Rio to Copacabana is 31 $Rs. For the yellow cab from Copacabana to the international airport I payed 32 $Rs and from Copacabana to the "Rodoviaria" I payed 15 $Rs. It seems to be that the fixed price is about the double of the normal price. So if you know the way and/or you have a map and it´s not the rush hour time, take the yellow cab. But if you arrive at rush hour time and it can take a long time to go than take the fixed price. The price for the bus in Rio is about 1,60 $Rs. It doesn´t depends on how far you...

Getting to Brazil

by msp_ssa

I've liked both United's and Delta's service to Brazil from the U.S. To get to Salvador you'll have to take a domestic carrier. My first time to Brazil I took the bus from Sao Paulo to Salvador and I'm glad I did. I made some good friends and I spoke very little Portuguese and understood even less. I was shocked with everyone's kindness and understanding. This wouldn't be the best option if you're short on time. It takes a little more than 30 hours to make this trip.P.S. We just took Varig to Brazil this past November 2004 and I was pleased with that experience. It was very easy to book online at Varig's website and pretty cheap.
