Driving in Rio de Janeiro

by histrionia62

We rented a car to drive to Buzios from Rio. Warning: driving in Rio is not for the faint of heart! Once you get across the bridge to Niteroi, the driving conditions improve, and once you get out the other side of Niteroi, it is downright pleasant. But driving in the city is chaotic, with little attention to lanes, lots of beeping horns, and suicidal motorbikers and pedestrians crossing your path. The highways out in the country can be nerveracking at night, as they go right through the middle of the small towns, and many pedestrians are trying to cross in the dark. Yikes!

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

by histrionia62

We took the bus one day to save cab fare, not realizing how incredibly cheap ($3) it is to take a cab across town. It was a hilarious thrill ride. The teenaged riders are experts at timing their steps towards the doors to the crazy lurching of the bus. The bus is also very cheap (I think it was about 30 cents) and is very convenient around the tourist parts of town. But the cabfare is so reasonable, treat yourself to a cab ride.

TAM

by Sharrie

I didn't fly on this airline. It's the domestic airline of Brazil & it has many connections between the different cities in Brazil. As far as I know, the fare on this particular airline is much cheaper.

Varig Brasil

by Sharrie

I flew Varig on business class from Santiago to Sao Paulo & again on economy from Sau Paulo to Foz do Iguacu. Service is regular & the ground staff in Santiago is not helpful nor friendly at all; considering it's a business class passenger counter. Other than that, the flights are punctual & safe. I much prefer Lan Chile though.

Intercity Bus Service in Brazil - in general

by glabah

Intercity bus services tend to be comfortable and cheap in Brazil. While not as comfortable as sleeping in your own bed, they are more comfortable than coach airplane seats.Frequently, this may be your best option for getting around in Brazil.Let's take an example: a friend arrived in S?o Paulo to go to Londrina. Because this person insisted on flying to Londrina, they spent 5 hours waiting for a connecting flight, then an hour and a half in flight. Leaving S?o Paulo at the same time on the bus, I could have been at or near Londrina in five hours, and with the comfort of the bus seats I could probably have spent that five hours in productive sleep recovering from the uncomfortable flight down. I probably would not have had to wait long, since bus services between the two cities is quite frequent. There are many many intercity companies, so the specifics depends on where you need to go and...

Electronic. tourist form at the Internet

by mangueirense

I have recently heard of some delays on international arrivals to Brazil. I do not have any experience with it nowadays, as I have been in Brazil the last time in 2001, but I have read that if before of your journey you fill out the electronical form for tourists that the delay should be not too much...don't know if it's right, but you can try it, right? The electronical form you can find at:http://servicos.dpf.gov.br/migracao/Then you simply fill in the dates and wait until you get the next window where you select the tourist visa for 90 days or whatever you filled in as travel-reason...(business, etc.)Hope this will help you somehow!

Jerico : If you don't take a 4by4 - Sans 4-4

by Maillekeul

The truck you have to take from a small town where the bus from Fortaleza stops, to Jericoacoara, is quite an adventure, as it will ride on the sand dunes and on the beach... But it's not done for it !!

Renting a car in Brazil

by rui_bijie

Renting a car in Brazil is quite expensive - but it is worth it! You are much more flexible. One way fees are quite high in Brazil. If you want to rent a car for a longer period than just for one or two days, prefer international rental companies. They have international standards and won't be tricky. If you have a digital camera, take pictures of the car right at the rental company - especially if there are already sctratches and dents (quite common!). This help if they want to hold you responsible for these damages.

Best way to get there, by...

Best way to get there, by plane! *Depending on how much travel you will be doing in Brazil, get an Airpass from Transbrasil, TAM or Varig. They're the best way to see more of Brazil for the buck.*For more info:Brazil Airpass

Airports

by acemj

Most people coming into Brazil will enter by way of Sao Paulo (code: GRU) or Rio de Janeiro (GIG), but there are modern, safe airports throughout the country. Brazil is the fifth largest country on earth, so if you plan to see it all and don't have a lot of time, you'll need to fly. The most affordable way for foreigners to fly around is to purchase an airpass (available to those who also have an international ticket) which you'll purchase before you arrive in the country. There are also some new discount carriers within Brazil that may make a trip between one or two destinations a better bargain than an airpass. Check out Gol (www.voegol.com.br) and Fly Airlines (www.voefly.com.br) and you may come across a good deal. The major Brazilian carriers include VASP, Varig and TAM.Also, keep in mind that if you purchased your airline tickets outside of Brazil, you will need to pay a departure...
