There's always this . . .

Hang gliding over Rio was one of the best experiences I had in Brazil. It really felt like I was soaring like a bird above the forested hillside and beach below. See my Rio page for details on how to do it yourself.

Helicopter

by acemj

You can tour both Rio de Janeiro and Foz do Iguacu by helicopter for spectacular views over each. I took a chopper over the amazing waterfalls in Iguacu and I noticed that helicopters operated from Sugarloaf by the Helisight Company.

Bus

by acemj

Bus drivers in Brazil tend to be nuts!! They like to try to put the bus on two wheels coming around corners in busy cities at incredible speeds! Okay, they might not all be like this, but compared to most buses I've ridden in the States, the drivers were definitely more adventurous. You'll pay the driver in some cases (sometimes there is a cashier near the rear door) and you'll have to stick your arm out and flag them down while you're waiting at the bus stop. Otherwise they'll just drive on by.

Taxi

by acemj

My experience with taxis in Brazil was mixed. Not all drivers were honest, but some were exceptionally so. It's important to learn a few words in Portuguese so you can at least ask approximately how much the fare will be before you agree to the ride. This may annoy some drivers, but that's better than getting ripped off. Look for the cabs marked "radio" to be sure you won't get kidnapped. They tend to be safer since the drivers are licensed and accountable to the company. At night in the larger cities, use the cabs always, as it is unsafe to walk around after dark in many places.

Rio subway

by acemj

Rio is serviced by a metro, although it currently does not reach deep into the most touristed zones of Copacabana and Ipanema. Tickets were 1.87 Reais as of October 2003 and the trains and stations are clean and safe. As with any subway, make sure you watch your valuables during the busier times.

flying to

every major City has an Airport..sometimes small and only a dirt strip, but has mostly all the facilities we know and expect, be aware Brasil is a realy big Country, a flight or two can cut down on travelling time and sure is worth it

Departure Tax leaving Brazil

by mangueirense

Don't forget, if you bought your- airplane ticket outside of Brazil (which is in most of the cases) that you need to pay a departure tax in cash when you check in at the airport to leave the country. The airlines normally accept Brazilian and US currency (but better to have it in Reais), but no credit cards! So be prepared when you leave the country to at least have some Reais back for not having to change US Dollars late at night..which can be sometimes difficult, if the plane leaves very late! This tax is included in the price if you bought the ticket from a travel agent based in Brazil, as they will forward the money to the Brazilian government. The international taxes you have to pay are devided in 4 categories, meaning that for example from Rio (GIG) and Sao Paulo (GRU) -as this airports are the main departure airports and belonging to the 1. category- you will pay more than leaving...

Not easy to move around

by aeroarce

Brazil is not for people rushing, it is not easy to move around as distances are hugh and transportation in between cities is not very frequent.the best Idea is to cath up one of the different travel passes for travelling by airplane that offer the different companies, it is not cheap but will save you lotýs of time and kilometres on a bus chair.

leaving SDU for CDH

by Hexepatty

Once again, we had to leave Rio for the US via Sao Paulo, so we did the trip in reverse.SDU to CDH via GO airlines, a bus/shuttle to GRU, and then NOn-stop back to MIA. We love to fly and it shows! We have the passport stamps to prove it. I adore traveling with Quentin more than anyone else, too.

Getting to Rio from Sao Paulo

by Hexepatty

So, Again, Flying is an option to get from Sao Paulo to Rio.. and when you are in a rush to get to Rio for Carnival, time is precious. We thought of taking the bus. We heard it took about five hours and cost pretty cheap, but we didn't want to waste the time on a bus since Carnival Awaited Us.Here is Q playing around w/ the Port-side engine. Kids... don't do this at home. This is Your Capt' Hexe speaking!
