Robbery:Many people in brasil are very poor and have nothing to loose. If you are robbed, give them the money. Even kids are dangerousand can kill people. The best is, not to carry much money more than 50R$ around.

The larger cities of Brazil...

by warlord

The larger cities of Brazil have high violent crime rates. Rio de Janeiro has one of the highest murder rates in the world as more than 6,000 people are killed in the city limits each year. More of a concern to the traveler is the threat of armed robbery and assault. Tourists are frequently held up at gunpoint outside of hotels, discos, and even on the beach. There are more than 500,000 children living on the streets of Rio and many have to resort to whatever it takes to survive. Don't think that a group of 10 year olds are harmless! Never venture into the favelas alone, and be wary when going with a guide. Use common sense (many tourists do not in Rio - its easy to be distracted), leave all valuables at the room, and take taxis at night. When you hear the guns shooting in the middle of the night, you will know how serious the crime problem really is. Travel agents just want your money...

by glicko

In the touristy areas there are a lot of panhandlers. Advice from Brazilians I spoke to: 'Don't give then money.' Little kids will come up and hug you (trying to get at your wallet). Two phrases in Protugese that I had to use far too often were:'Não! Va embora!' (No! Go away!)Just be careful and confident and you'll have no problems.

About visas: If you are coming...

by maricamp

About visas: If you are coming from the US, you will need a Visa to come into the country.About the water: do not drink off plastic water bottles because the bars and restaurants sometimes refill them with tap water. If possible, select the glass ones. And don't drinkg stuff with ice!!!About policemen: stay away from them. That simple.About speedos: If you have sworn never to wear one, you may want to reconsider. Brazilian guys aren't afraid of showing off (hehehe).

Theft and robberies are...

by ikohavi

Theft and robberies are unfortunately very common in Brazil (especially during the Carnaval time). I was mugged in Rio - 3 people followed me from the bank, and the minute I was a little away from people they robbed me with a knife. So here are some tips from this incident:Go straight to the hotel after you took out money. Don't carry around too much money, but have a little bit incase of robbery. It's better to give them something right in the beginning, so they don't get mad. Otherwise they can rip all your clothes up in order to find some cash somewhere.Don't try to fight them. 100$ or whatever you have there - is not that much for us, but it can cost you with your life.Don't try to scream. I had many people around seeing it, and they prefare to walk away then to deal with it. Screaming will make the robbers mad and it's not clear what they can do then (either run away or hurt...

Do not wear expensive or even...

by kathyceo

Do not wear expensive or even good jewelry, flaunt cameras, or other valuables while travelling in Brazil. The people are not dangerous, but many are poor, and the prospect of grabbing some items which could become quick cash is too tempting to ignore. Tourists generally do not have to worry about serious harm (rape or murder) but especially in the larger cities, do not stroll at night--and if you do, have no jewelry, purses, watches on your body. During the day some young boys may even try to scam you by dirtying your shoe and then demand payment to clean it etc. These are not sufficient concerns to skip Brazil please, it is a wonderful beautiful country that is a must see for any curious worldly traveller.

Prior to our trip, I...

by Globtrotter

Prior to our trip, I read/heard horror stories from people who had been in Brazil and from official US government webpages. For instance, Lonely Planet recommends leaving all your money at the hotel and taking only the amount you need for the day. A few pages later, however, they write that hotel lockers are not safe...This is the most annoying part of traveling through Brazil: you need to constantly divide money between people, bags and pockets, watch people around you and be on your guards at all times.Dangers result from the huge gap between the poor and the wealthy. To avoid drawing attention, we left all valuables at home and only took items we wouldn't mind loosing. As in any big cities, use common sense an you'll be ok.

by alemi

As you know Brazil is well-known as dangerous place.I never had problems there, because you should dress as a normal person, not showing the others your brand new camera, or your wallet full of money and credit cards...Watch out. The children follow you asking money: they are not dangerous, but they run fast. Offer them some coins, and they' ll leave you walking away.
