The weather can be quite extreme, so carry a light rain coat, warm weather gear, sun tan lotion etc.

Being such a remote spot, if you have any unusual medications, ensure you take enough with you.

A lot more film (or memory cards) than you reckon you'll need. Everyone I know who has been to Easter island always says they take many more photos there than they expected to!

A small magnetic compass, not because you'll get lost, but to move over the Navel of the World - a magnetic stone that is almost perfectly circular. If you move the compass over the stone, the needle goes bezerk as the stone appears to have its own magnetic field.

Make sure you have a day pack, preferably one that can hold a large water bottel.

Shorts, sandals that can be hiked in and T-Shirts with an SP rating.

Make sure you have sun block for skin and lips. Make sure you have aftersun.

If you have a digital camera or any other electrival device, make sure you have the two pronged round pin adapters. Better yet, you can cheaply buy new power leads for your devices in Santiago.

There is swimming on the beach, so take you swimming gear and make sure you have sun block. I recommend you take a pair of swimming goggles as well.

If you live in the UK, you should take a trip to the British Museum. In the Great Court you will find, near the cafe, Hoa Hakananai'a, one of the two Moai in possesion of the museum.

More than one pair of shoes--they will easily get dirty
    Rain protection
    Swimsuit
A hat is absolutely necessary, preferably a wide brimmed one

    All of the usual toiletries
The island is isolated, so make sure you have enough prescription medicine with you for an extended trip

Lots of memory card space is needed. This is a once in a lifetime trip for many, so you do not want to feel restricted when taking photos
    I also recommend a tripod

    Beach towel
Lots of water bottles or something to store enough water to travel around the island
Sun block--the sun's rays are very intense here, especially in the summer

A compass is nice when visiting the magnetic stone on the north shore
Bring a flashlight for exploring the caves

  • Lan Chile enforces the baggage restictions regarding weight. I believe the max for checked baggage is 30lbs. They also weigh carryon baggage. Be sure to check the guidelines before departing from Santiago.

Although it was very hot when we travelled there (December 2003), it was very windy. A windbreaker would have been handy. Be sure to bring some good shoes for hiking. Although you don't have to hike too far to see the moais, you'll want some comfortable shoes when you do so. I wore a pair of Teva sandals to the quarry once and nearly tumbled down the mountain! Be prepared to throw away the hiking shoes after your trip - they'll be REALLY worn and stained from the dark dirt!

Bring every lens and camera you have! We kept running out of film! I don't think you can take a bad photo of a moai...

Be sure to bring a lot of sunscreen. It was very windy when we were there (December 2003), so you don't realize how HOT it is and how much sun you got until it is WAY too late! Slap on the sunscreen or you'll end up looking like a lobster!

  • strong walking shoes or boots.
a hat and shirts with long sleeves to cover up - the sun is very bright and fierce.

High factor sun cream as there is very little shade by the statues.

Lots of film, more than you think you will need and extra batteries.

bring any medicines you need with you as they are difficult to get and you don't want to waste time trying to get them. You will want to be out exploring the island.
Also carry medicines in your hand luggage, one man had his in his check in luggage..... which went missing!

  • There is no chemist/pharmacy in town as the island use the hospital dispensary.

Film and everything else is more expensive than in Chile. I visited a one room store with many different kinds of merchandise, all more expensive. There is also limited choices of food. I think there is only 1 baker in town. The baker bakes round rolls with his name stamped on the top. Everyone on the island eats this same kind of roll, even the hotel's restaurant.

I did the backpack thing. If you plan to camp around the island, then a pack is the best choice. You should always take a day pack anyhow for the daily outings exploring.

The sun and wind can be fierce, so bring a good sun hat (a safari hat works well as it covers the neck). The island is comprised of volcanic rock, so the sharp points are virtually impossible to walk barefoot on. Be sure to always wear quality footwear.
Rain is not uncommon, so bring a brolly or rain poncho

Little things like shampoo etc. are very pricy on the island so make sure you bring your own!

Bring every bit of camera equipment you can get (including film). It's not easy to get anything else while you're there and the photo ops that await are unbelieveable.

While it is possible to camp on the island, few do. Probably due to the lack of the homey things (like running fresh water, a tree to squat behind). As the ground is quite rocky and sharp, stick to the areas near the beaches (Ovahe and Anakena)

Don't forget to bring along some items to trade as well (see General)
