 | Easter Island Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 41 | | Hanga Roa may not be the gastronomic capital of the world but it does have enough restaurants serving good food for you to be able to pick and choose and eat at different places throughout your stay. As you would expect, fish features heavily on menus, we ate it at virtually every meal and it was always fresh and, with only one exception, very well prepared. No great long details of restaurants or meals we ate here, this is a precis of the places we tried - the way tourism is growing on Easter Island, no doubt there'll be new ones to try before long. Breakfast at Bicky's - our residencial. Always ample - fresh guava juice, fresh fruit, the ubiquitous flat rolls (there's only one baker on the island, you get these rolls everywhere you go), ham, cheese, avocado, goyabada (guava paste) and a lashings of coffee or tea ... and fresh-cooked pancakes straight from pan to plate on our last morning. A great start to the day. Picnic lunch of fresh fruit and empanadas brought from town, and afternoon teas of Coke and homemade cake under the palm trees at Anakena ... simple pleasures Tia Berta ... queen of the empanada. Freshly made and cooked to crisp, golden perfection, filled with ham, cheese, tuna, seafood or sausage - or combinations of the same. A salad, chips to share, all served up by an eye-popping hunk of a "waitress". A great favourite with the locals. Good choice for lunch. Cafe Ra'a - another good choice for lunch. Seafood soup in a bowl crammed with prawns, chunks of fish and flavour. Good salads and sandwiches for the others, real coffee and a book exchange. A few tables outside under shady umbrellas.
Time for dinner ... Rapa Nui eats late, so if you may get an outside table, perfect on a balmy evening, if you time it right. Te Moana - a few outside tables, inside a long, dimly lit room opening onto a small side garden. A fantastic ceviche, served in a clam shell, full of sweet white fish and prawns, flavoured beautifully with lime, coconut, fresh herbs and subtle spicing - fresh as fresh. The others were making similarly appreciative noises over their choices of grilled and fried fish. A chilled bottle of excellent Chilean sauvignon blanc and we were all well pleased. Recommended by Bicky and a good choice. Restaurant Pea - maybe if it had not been such an overcast evening the restaurant may not have been quite so gloomy. No atmosphere, and overcooked fish for me - albacore, which toughens if it's left under the grill too long. The others had better luck but this place didn't live up to its reviews. Better options elsewhere. Merahi Ra'a - down by the harbour, overlooking Ahu Tautira, nice outside seating area. Beautiful fresh fish, grilled to perfection, served with a simple salad and golden chips - no need to do anything fancy when the product is so good; smiling service to accommodate our appointment with an aeroplane, not a bad way to spend our last hour or so on this magical place. We had a pretty miserable dining experience at the Playa Pea, so the Merahi Ra'a was truly a delightful surprise. The food was very good. There were 5 at the table and no one had anything but praise for their meal. You could eat inside or out. The service was exceptional. The meals were pretty expensive but fairly typical by Hanga Roa standards. My fish was 5500 pesos and my wife's chicken was 4500. Beer and coke were each 1000.
Everything was good, but what stood out was an incredibly strong and very tasty garlic 'butter'. It was great on bread and everyone raved about it. Don't bother brushing your teeth; it won't help. This isn't a tip for a particular restaurant, there are quite a few in Hanga Roa (a favourite was just by the cinema, but I have forgotten its name, it had Coke advertising on the fron of it). As you would expect on such a tiny island surrounded by sea, the speciality would almost definitely include fish, and yes it does. The raw fish is particularly good, and I never had any problems afterwards. It is worth asking whether the fish is from Easter island or from Chile, as of course the local fish is going to be fresher (well you hope so anyway!). It also feels nicer to be eating local produce. If you are from Chile, you will find Easter Island expensive (perhaps twice the price). If you are from Europe or have just come from French Polynesia (Tahiti), then it will feel quite good value!

The Merahi Ra'a is a family owned, family operated local restaurant, offering mainly fish dishes. FRESH fish dishes. Browsing the menu can only give You an idea of what food they offer, because the actual fish always depends on the daily catch. Sometimes they don't have a fish or two which is on the menu, sometimes they can offer some other kind, which is not on the menu... :) The waitresses are very-very friendly with moderate English knowledge, but enough to understand and to not mess up Your order. The restaurant itself as decoration goes is nothing extra, nothing special. Try to sit outside to watch the nearby port, football field, or the Moai by the port in sunset! Most people go there in the evenings. This is where I had my first and also my last evening's dinner on the Island, and a few dishes in between as well! You shouldn't miss it while on Easter Island! Update in 2008: the restaurant has been completely remodeled, with the balcony now being closed and walled and lots of touristy Rapa Nui decoration installed on the inside. It looks much more touristy now and has lost some of its charm that I saw back in 2005, but the food is still very good, and I still suggest that you eat fish! :)

They call themselfes : "The most isolated coffee shop in the world". It might be right about the world, but it is not the most isolated coffee shop on Easter Island, being situated at the 'main' street Atamu Tekena. Sitting on the terrace the place is just ideal to watch the locals coming by. And the name Ra'a means 'sun', so nothing to worry about. Café Ra'a has limited opening hours: daily (except Tuesday) from 10.30 - 14.30 and 19.00 - 21.00 hrs. They offer coffee's, breakfast, fruit juice, home madecake , fresh salads and sandwiches.
Cafe Ra'a is more or less a coffee shop, but also offers a small menu. We had a couple of times the menu of the day and it was very good and affordable !! Te Moana is a little bit unique in Hanga Roa, as this is basically the only international style "bar-pub-coffeehouse-restaurant" facility. If you go here after sun-down you will most likely bump into the fellow international tourists, mostly those who are not staying in the hotel or on an organized tour. The architecture is "pacific", but the music played is a large variety, including international songs. It is usually packed and sometimes people are sitting on the sidewalks outside, next to the few tables outside.
They have all sorts of international food, from Thai soup to Italian Pasta, but also serve all of the typical local food as well. The Tuna sandwhich was very tasty. You can get a coffee or a good beer and they also have several types of short drinks available. They have all sorts of food, fish being the best one in my opinion. Their fries were very tasty at the time when I was there. The surrounding is very nice, it is located right at the port, and the building is built around a small lagune. While eating, you can view the port, or the little "swimming pool" where sometimes school children have a swim-lesson. There are usually kids surfing around as well. They usually have the windows open, so you can feel the fresh sea breeze while eating, it's really cool! A unique feature was that on my last visit I asked around about the music they were playing and they offered me a whole mp3 CD in return. The CD was average price (~15 USD if I remember correctly) but includes something like 6 or 7 albums of Easter Island bands, so it was good value I think. Update in 2008: Tuna with onion and vegetables is still very good, location is the same, now they have more tables outside, right by the sea which is very nice.
I have eaten at Pea's a few times, sometimes with friends, sometimes just by myself. My favorite food (as at most of the restaurants at Rapa Nui) was fish, in this case the tuna fish with onions and vegetables. Of course I ordered a side meal of french fries to it as well, but the fish was delicious. With your back to the Moai standing at the port, you will see it on the left.

Non-touristy restaurant w/ really delicious seafood. You can also watch the sun setting on the ocean if u get one of the outdoor seats.
My friend ordered the same dish twice - fresh salmon - and he swore that he would go back to Easter Island just for this meal. I ordered a combo meal that included a rapa nui cake w/ fresh fish. I like it but not as much as the raw-fish dish that they serve. Unfortunately, i cannot remember the names of the dishes. The restaurant is very close to the waterfront. Locals and tourists alike frequent this spot, and I recommend eating at the outside area. The menu has many choices, and local food is on there. Service is friendly, and the prices were fairly reasonable for Easter Island.
I ate here twice and had fish both times. The cerviche was new for me. It is raw fish mixed like a salad with vegetables. There was also fried sweet potatoes and Rapa Nui cake. Located on Main Street in Hanga Roa is a little empanada stand. The food was cheap and delicious, all homemade empanadas. Ask for the owners special homemade hotsauce! More importantly the owner was super friendly, talkative and really personable. I think we sat here almost everyday and had an empanada. Most of the tourists and locals stopped here sooner or later and we ended up talking to quite a few of them. It was really great. Leave a Comment
