Hanga Roa restaurants and cafes: Seafood and empanadas

by TheWanderingCamel

Hanga Roa may not be the gastronomic capital of the world but it does have enough restaurants serving good food for you to be able to pick and choose and eat at different places throughout your stay. As you would expect, fish features heavily on menus, we ate it at virtually every meal and it was always fresh and, with only one exception, very well prepared. No great long details of restaurants or meals we ate here, this is a precis of the places we tried - the way tourism is growing on Easter Island, no doubt there'll be new ones to try before long. Breakfast at Bicky's - our residencial. Always ample - fresh guava juice, fresh fruit, the ubiquitous flat rolls (there's only one baker on the island, you get these rolls everywhere you go), ham, cheese, avocado, goyabada (guava paste) and a lashings of coffee or tea ... and fresh-cooked pancakes straight from pan to plate on our last...

Booth at Anakena: Grab a fresh Sandwich!

by balint01

If you don't take enough food and water with you from Hanga Roa in the morning, the only chance you would have to grab any of these is at Anakena, next to the beach where a few booths are located selling fresh sandwhiches, salads, snacks and drinks. I chose to have a fish sandwhich for take-away - and I got a huge monstre sandwhich that was impossible to be eaten while driving for example. The very nice local woman prepared it fresh in front of my eyes from fishmeat and vegetables and some sauce. It was big, very tasty and enough to easily keep me going until dinner while actively exploring the island.I don't know about the other booths, but I definiately suggest you try the one with lady on the picture - she is a great cook! I only had one fish sandwhich, but this was the best (and probably the biggest) in my life!

Restaurante Pea: Dine out by the Port

by balint01

They have all sorts of food, fish being the best one in my opinion. Their fries were very tasty at the time when I was there. The surrounding is very nice, it is located right at the port, and the building is built around a small lagune. While eating, you can view the port, or the little "swimming pool" where sometimes school children have a swim-lesson. There are usually kids surfing around as well. They usually have the windows open, so you can feel the fresh sea breeze while eating, it's really cool!A unique feature was that on my last visit I asked around about the music they were playing and they offered me a whole mp3 CD in return. The CD was average price (~15 USD if I remember correctly) but includes something like 6 or 7 albums of Easter Island bands, so it was good value I think.Update in 2008: Tuna with onion and vegetables is still very good, location is the same, now they...

Buffet in the main intersection: Kite Mate Empanadas!

by balint01

I found that the local people stop by this place to grab an empanada, on a regular basis. From the day I discovered it I went back a couple of times during the day, just stopping by, eating an empanada for a quick lunch-snack and keep driving or walking on. The man on the picture became my friend by the last day, even though I don't speak Spanish... He was very friendly, waving to me everytime I went by the place, and saying goodbye on my last day!Update in 2008: This small place got repainted in 3 years, with more chairs out in front of the building and some more sunroof above. The empanadas are still very tasty, and they offer a bit revised menu including ham-cheese-tomato (Napolitana) - my new favorite! Empanadas!(Fish, Meat or Cheese - fish is not always available)

Merahi Ra'a: FRESH seafood at its best

by balint01

The Merahi Ra'a is a family owned, family operated local restaurant, offering mainly fish dishes. FRESH fish dishes. Browsing the menu can only give You an idea of what food they offer, because the actual fish always depends on the daily catch. Sometimes they don't have a fish or two which is on the menu, sometimes they can offer some other kind, which is not on the menu... :) The waitresses are very-very friendly with moderate English knowledge, but enough to understand and to not mess up Your order. The restaurant itself as decoration goes is nothing extra, nothing special. Try to sit outside to watch the nearby port, football field, or the Moai by the port in sunset! Most people go there in the evenings. This is where I had my first and also my last evening's dinner on the Island, and a few dishes in between as well! You shouldn't miss it while on Easter Island!Update in 2008: the...

Restaurant Pea: Great Polynesian Food

by krissyM

The is restaurant is right next to Playa Pea on the outskirts of Hanga Roa. The restaurant serves traditional Polynesian Food from Rapa Nui. I found that the prices were below average, as the closer you get to the center of town, the more expensive the food is. The restaurant has an amazing view as it looks out onto the ocean. It veranda which juts out over the cliff will mesmerize you as you watch the waves crashing below. I ordered a traditional dish of chicken with a pineapple/onion/balsamic sauce and a side order of sweet potatoe fries. YUM!

La Taverne du pecheur: Steer Clear!!!

by Nomad26

I have to recommend you NOT going to La Taverne du Pecheur near the main harbour area in Hanga Roa. Unless you want the worst of France personified in the rude, arrogant owner and translated all too well into the over-priced, over-cooked dishes steer clear! There are many better alternatives along Te Pito O Te Henua where thankfully smoking is NOT permitted in the kitchens and dismissive service isn't the norm. Dreadful dining experience all round, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

Café Ra'a: Most isolated coffee shop in the world

by vtveen

They call themselfes : "The most isolated coffee shop in the world".It might be right about the world, but it is not the most isolated coffee shop on Easter Island, being situated at the 'main' street Atamu Tekena. Sitting on the terrace the place is just ideal to watch the locals coming by. And the name Ra'a means 'sun', so nothing to worry about.Café Ra'a has limited opening hours: daily (except Tuesday) from 10.30 - 14.30 and 19.00 - 21.00 hrs. They offer coffee's, breakfast, fruit juice, home madecake , fresh salads and sandwiches. Cafe Ra'a is more or less a coffee shop, but also offers a small menu. We had a couple of times the menu of the day and it was very good and affordable !!

Te Moana: Generous portions

by sswagner

This is where I chose to eat my first night on the island, and it was a great beginning to the Easter Island culinary experience. I ordered a curry fish dinner. It is important to add that I was very hungry and wondered if dessert would be needed after ordering an entree. When the meal came out, it was immediately realized that I would be full. Portions are huge, and there was a lot of meat on the plate in addition to the vegatables and rice. The restaurant is on the main street of Hanga Roa not far from the supermarket. I chose to eat outdoors and enjoy the evening air. Service was with a smile here. Prices are expensive in Easter Island, but Te Moana was on par with the other places. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to leave on a full stomach. I tried the curry fish. I believe the fish was tuna. It was delicious.

Merahi Ra'a: Relaxing atmosphere and relatively inexpensive

by sswagner

The restaurant is very close to the waterfront. Locals and tourists alike frequent this spot, and I recommend eating at the outside area. The menu has many choices, and local food is on there. Service is friendly, and the prices were fairly reasonable for Easter Island. I ate here twice and had fish both times. The cerviche was new for me. It is raw fish mixed like a salad with vegetables. There was also fried sweet potatoes and Rapa Nui cake.
