Antofagasta

by chancay

the main place in Antofagasta. We´ve been on our way down to Santiago with a direct bus from Arica....so we´ve had only an hour of break here to have a look at the city. I saw beautiful buildings around the plaza de armas and special old railway station buildings. in general:Antofagasta is the largest city in Chile's Far North and the country's fourth most populous, with 235,000 inhabitants. It is also the capital city for the namesake region, as well as a major shipping port for the region's output of copper, nitrate and other minerals. Its economy is based on the provision of services and support for the mining industry, and on a sizable fishing industry. Perched on a long, narrow strip of land at the foot of the Coastal Range, Antofagasta has some renowned universities, several beaches in the vicinity, balmy weather and well-tended parks. It is a good base from which to explore the...

Or Torres del Paine in the south of Chile. In this park you hike from one hut to an other. We did a 10 hour hike, a bit to much perhaps but a great experience.More info:http://www.gochile.cl/eng/Guide/ChileNationalParks/TorresdelPaine/Torres-d l-Paine-1.asp

Northern Chile

Chiile is a really large country worthy of a month or more. I only had but a week to return to Bolivia so my VT page won't make it justice. Nevertheless, I loved seeing the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth.

Watching the penguins in Patagonia - yes, they really do waddle in lines. Be warned, in November it was freeeezing cold!A close second is eating the best Apple Strudel in the world in a Swiss-style chalet overlooking a snow-topped volcano in the Lake District near Pucon.

Visit the capital of Chile: Santiago! 5 million people live in this magnificent city at the foot of the Andes mountains. Stroll across La Plaza de Armas or along the banks of Rio Mapocho and have a rest in one of these amazing cafés. Climb Cerro Santiago for a breathtaking view over the city or just laze around in one of Santiagos beautiful parks such as Parque Forestal or Quinta Normal.
