Don't worry so much about...

by Cherie_J

Don't worry so much about seeing all the sites...the richest part of Chile are the people themselves. When I lived in San Bernardo for 4-5 months I met this shepard boy (Tao) who tended the animals on the Cerro Chena. He invited me to visit his family later that evening and little did I know that at the base of the hill lies a military base and behind that a hidden village. Everyone who lives inside works for the goverment in some way or another. Whether it is farming the vinyards & making wine or like Tao tending to the horse that are later slaughtered and the meat sold. It was all very interesting back there and there are many adventures to come about this special cerro. FIRST story...pertains to Juan de la Bautista and his wife Maria. They also lived in this tucked away village. Juan actually tracked me down and wanted to have a religous discussion with me. I thought cool...later it...

Spend time in Bella Vista and...

by Marie66

Spend time in Bella Vista and Plaza Nunoa, two of the artsty/studenty section of the city. Go up San Cristobal and Santa Lucia in the early morning after a rain, when the view is really clear. It is quite impressive. Seeing Pablo Neruda's houses and eating fresh seafood in the gorgeous village Zapallar. Camping in Siete tazas, full of ridiculously beautiful and surprising waterfalls. Hiking up volcanos in the south.

We have the privilege of paying $USD 30 along with Yanks and Mexicans.Lots of people descend upon you as you exit the customs, offering hotels and transportation.TurBus will take you downtown or to the bus terminal for less than 2 dollars.Santiago and Valparaiso has good transportation.Buses leave SAntiago every few minutes for Valparaiso. Valparaiso is the seaside city, much older than the new Vina del Mar. Being a port, it has much naval history associated with it, including a british presence going back centuries. The city is situated between the sea and the row of hills, and the view from the different places are inspiring indeed, as they have inspired Ruben Dario who arrived here at the end of 19th century and of course, our own dear Pablo, the most widely read poet of this past century. Many of the buildings are being brightly painted and rehabilitated and the imagination allows a...

Visit National Park Torres...

by Ekahau

Visit National Park Torres del Paine(Payne Park)world famous park is in the Chilean part of Patagonia. It covers 538,315 acres and includes the area around the impressive Cordillera del Paine (Payne Range) the youngest on earth and probably one of the most impressive natural landscapes in the world. Four hours by plane from Santiago de Chile and 248 miles from Punta Arenas, in the Mythical Straits of Magellan, the park is 150 feet above sea level. However, it´s peak tower over us at 9,840 feet, rising in true walls capped by perpetual snows. WONDERBA or MAGNIFICO Have to email me priv. for that but what a memory.

VISIT SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA. A very small oasis town at the foot of the Andes serving as base to all us backpackers. Several tours start from here including the spectacular trip to the geysers (see main pic). San Pedro also acts as starting point to journeys into both Bolivia (towards Uyuni) and Argentina (towards Salta).

Visit ValparaisoWhat's...

Visit ValparaisoWhat's There?: A port town on the coast west of Santiago. Built on the side of hills that rise from the water it is full of very narrow winding streets and beautiful architecture dating back to the 19th century. It's definately worth spending time walking through these streets. Take one or two of the 'ascensores' (lifts) that carry you up the hillside. These are used by the people that live there to save them from walking every time. There is a GREAT seafood restaurant called 'Los Porteños'. Not to be missed if you plan on lunching in the city. I don't recall the adress but just ask the locals.Location: 1.5 - 2hrs west of Santiago, on the coast.Activities:Security:Getting there and away:

You must go to north and see Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. Also you must go to south and visit Chiloe, with their wonderful wooden churches (named World Heritage from UNESCO), Carretera Austral and Torres del Paine.Picture here is from Estuario de Reloncavi, where Carretera Austral begin

In Santiago, take a little ride on the metro subway. It takes you from parts of Santiago to neighboring towns. View the beautiful buildings and scenery, as well as meet nice people. There are also a few malls where you can stop and do some shopping.

You must visit Vina del Mar/...

by kika404

You must visit Vina del Mar/ Valparaiso. There are some hangliding areas along the beach. Although, I didn't try it, it would have provided an even better view of the ocean and sunset. Here is a picture of statue of the Virgin Mary carved into a rock in Vina del Mar.I remember the amazing geography in Vina when I walked through a forest thick with oak trees, and made my way downhill to a beach with snow-white sand. The uniqueness of the people, culture, scenery and food. (Not neccesarily in that order)
