Camera caution with Indigenous people

by Ames24

When in Santiago, there was a small group of indigenous women making some kind of protest, with drums and a poster... seeing such a group of whites, and some of them with cameras, they kind of turned inward to each other, backs out, and cautiously watching. I didn't (wasn't even able) to try for a picture... didn't really realize til I was informed later that they are suspicious of people with cameras, etc.In some of my studies, I also learned that, for ex., people from some indigenous groups, like from Peruvian Andes, are very superstitious about having their picture taken. Ie. They fear you want to kill them / cut them in half if you want like just a waist-up pic or a face pic. Or, that if you want a picture of them, you want to take their soul or something to that affect. So anyway, take care with your camera around them :)

IN CHILE WE GIVE ONLY 1 KISS IN THE CHEEK

by Saldi

Ok, let's starts with some local advices:Tipping is always a 10f you wanna thank to someone or for something, just say 'gracias!'If you can, learn some phrases in spanish (there's not too much people who can talk to you in english very well, just the basics words). When you say hello to a friend , the frenchs gives 2 kisses in the cheek, the dutch 3 kisses and the Russians... well some of them also kiss you in the mouth!, but in Chile, if you want to say hello to somebody or some people introduce to you to another person (in this case man to a woman or woman to a men) we give only 1 kiss (I know, some people say "it's too little", but I'm always answer "Yeah, it's only one, but very intense!"..hehehe!.

The people were really friendly and we regretted not being able to speak Spanish - we would have learnt a lot more about the places we visited if we could have held a conversation with the local people.

by Free-South

There is a curious thing going on in Chile, which is, if you are an obvious foreign lad, you will get lassies coming to you and asking you a coin. It's not like begging, it's different... Those lassies may actually have money, but they expect you to give them a coin or something... I had them asking me at the mall in Santiago, and in El Tabo as well. My bro Dorian, who travelled to Chile a couple of years later, told me the same thing when asked about it. Well, most of those lassies look very beautiful, so, if you are single, do give them a few coins. It could be the start of a cool friendship, at least.

Shopping in Santiago can be a very amusing activity. Purchasing goods often involves being greeted by one employee, served by another employee, having your purchase wrapped by another person, giving your money to yet another employee who uses the cash register and gives you your receipt. All I can suggest is that you enjoy the service!!!
