My tent after a long day of...

by DaveOrlando

My tent after a long day of hiking! I have heard that Puerto Natales has a lively nightlife for a small town, but I arrived too late on my way in to check it out. Punta Arenas is a larger city (pop. 100,000) with more options, but again, my return trip was late. Not much nightlife on this trip for me. This photo is of Punta Arenas from my hotel (Finis Terrae) and you can see the Magellan Strait in the background. Punta Arenas was once a thriving port until the Panama Canal opened and now it is involved mostly in petroleum and tourism.

The Boomarang Bar (yes it is an Australian Bar) at Av. General Holly in Barrio Providencia is a bright and happening place. The food is excellent and the service great. Try 'pan australiano' ...The beer is cold, the service is warm. The fact that someone has built an Australian Bar in Santiago beggers belief. During the day, casual dress is sufficient. At night, smart casual is recommended.

la Serena is one of the bigger cities in Chile. It has a good quality nightlife. In january most tourists come from Argentina and spend their money in pubs, restaurants and the beach. The shoreline is about 10 KM or more. Starting in Coquimbo and ending at a rocky shore called Punta de Teatinos. Today many hotels and touristcabines are build in order to meet the ever growing demand of lodging and housing all the tourists. Dress casual and you'll fit in nicely among the local people. They have a taste for clothes similar to that of Europeans.

Cherie_J's Nightlife Tip

by Cherie_J

Every town no matter how rich or poor has at least one Plaza. They are often very nicely manicured and are the central gathering spot for both young and old.In the evening hours be sure to look ahead...you might see a bit more than you would like.

the nightlife in Santiago, starts at about ten and lasts till about 3 or 4in the morning.. or whenever you get home.. they know how to dance and they'll teach you... the style is great.. lots of wine .... i don't know why, but i met quite a few people who liked to have wine and coke (cola). ... i thought it was very strange at first, but i definitly got used to it.. =) while i was there i was quite a spectecal.. with my californian baggy jeans style.. they were very surprised to see a girl with baggy clothes.. and i also had short hair.. to my shoulders.. that was also daring, i guess for women .. most of the guys in my classes at school had longer hair than i did..

by kika404

Santiago is booming with nightclubs at night. But around 1 in morning it's not really a safe place for a couple of girls to be alone. House parties were a great way to meet people who were around my age and had the same interests. There were also a lot of European and American bands who were visiting Chile while I was there. I got to see Bjork, and Smashing Pumpkins (which, including Metallica, were very big over there).

At first I was wary of walking around Santiago at night, but once I did I thought it seemed like a very safe city for its size especially compared to the horror stories you hear about Rio and the like. I thought the parks were great places at night, really bustling with people trying to escape the heat of their houses. During the day the parks are too hot to really enjoy, but at night after the sun's down, people come out to just sit and talk. And to enjoy the cool night air.Free and a real slice of Santiago. Can't get any more casual.

There are numerous bars in Santiago, especially in the Bellavista and Providencia sections. Beach towns Valparaiso and Vina del Mar have a strong nightlife as well. If you like beer, try Royal Guard. It's inexpensive and very good.
