  • I would be reluctant to follow babajaga88's recommendation, as visitchile is not always up to their promises. There are a lot of tour offers, taking into account my experiences, I suggest to refrain from visitchile.

In the surroundings of Pucon, there are a lot of undiscovered places. We were amazed by Ojos de Caburga, a waterfall that lies on private property.
You pay a small sum to enter the land, walk around the amazing waterfalls and walk between sheep to watch the incredible blue water of Ojos de Caburga.

The Skua glacier was quite the most spectacular of the glaciers of Chile which I viewed as I cruised the fjords of Chile. It was the last of the glaciers that we viewed and was allocated a whole afternoon in our cruising schedule.

Everyone on the ship was excited about this particular leg of the trip and gathered on board, almost without exception, to view this spectacular site. People posed for amazing pics and sipped hot Baileys chocolate, snuggling under warm blankets.

We were lucky as the weather that day was terrific. Our view was crisp and clear. We sailed very close to the glacier itself and watched as what appeared to be tiny icebergs surrounded the ship. Bearing the Titanic in mind, I am quite sure that the icebergs only looked tiny from where we stood.

When a piece of ice breaks away from a glacier that is known as calving and these pieces of ice then become dangerous icebergs.

This is an experience not to be missed.

Chile has some remarkable glaciers and the best way to see all of them in a short space of time is by sea. I sailed past the glaciers in a cruise ship and sat in the main upper deck breakfast and lunch room watching the icy world go by. Unfortunately the weather was inclement on that day and so the visibility was bad. However, I could make them all out and felt a real sense of adventure.

The most spectacular of all was the Skua glacier and it was the one that the weather was great for. My pics of that particular glacier are superb and deserve a tip all of their own.

  • Arturo Prat - Chile

Talcahuano Naval Base, home to the ironclad gunship "Huascar", is well worth a visit. On arrival you'll need to check in with your passport at the gate. Before making your way to the dock to be taken across to the ship itself, take a few moments to look around the small memorial park known as the Plaza de los Heroes. Here you'll find naval guns of different periods, anchors and statues commemorating three men who lost their lives on board the "Huascar".

Arturo Prat is regarded as the greatest of Chile's heroes and you will see memorials to him wherever there is a naval presence, and his name on streets and squares all over Chile. He was killed in action against the Peruvians in 1879 at the Battle of Iquique. The Peruvians had rammed his ship, the "Esmeralda" with their monitor, the "Huascar". Prat lept aboard the "Huascar", only to be killed almost immediately. His death and that of the two men who jumped with him, led to his name became the rallying cry of the Chilean Navy, and the three becoming the country's greatest naval heroes.

Today, the navy's beautiful sail training ship, named "Esmeralda" is based at Talcahuano.

The elegant white building behind the plaza, known as "El Vaticano" is the headquarters of the Commander in Chief of the Second Naval Zone and is not open to the public.

Spanish language guided tours of the base take place at weekends and include the Naval Port, the residential area, the breakwater and the Asmar shipyard. Between 14:30 and 17:00 hrs, two small trains leave from the main gate, Puerta de Los Leones. The tour takes 50 minutes. During the week, the trains are used for visiting school parties and other visitors are limited to the Plaza de los Heroes and the "Huasca" itself.

Closed Mondays. Opening hours 9.30 -12 and 2-5.30

You may only take photographs of the park and the "Huascar". Nothing else of the base should be photographed. The photo of the "Esmeralda " here has been cropped out of the background of a photo taken on board the "Huascar".

    Buque Huascar

Built in Britain in 1864 and once the pride of the Peruvian navy, the ironclad gunship "Huascar" is much more than an historic relic, one of only two such survivors of this period of naval history afloat anywhere in the world. To Chileans, she is hugely symbolic, a tangible reminder of the War of the Pacific that saw Peru and Bolivia ceding large areas of land to Chile and to Chile establishing itself as the major naval power on this side of the Pacific at that time. The victory came at a price, most notably the death of the country's greatest naval hero - Arturo Prat - who was killed at the Battle of Iquique as he led an attempt to board the "Huasca" which had rammed his ship, the Chilean Navy's flagship, "Esmeralda".
By the end of the battle, the "Huascar" was the only ship remaining of the Peruvian Navy. For then next five months she managed to evade the Chileans whilst constantly shelling their ports up and down the coast. Finally however, she was captured and became part of the Chilean navy's fleet, where she served until 1900.

Today she is at anchor at the Talchuano Naval Base, kept spotlessly shipshape by the navy's new recruits. Visitors can wander all over the vessel, taking in all the aspects of 19th century naval life. Relations between the two countries under whose flag she sailed have improved since her days at sea and today she is a shrine to the heroes of both navies, a unique distinction, and held to be the grave of her last Peruvian commander, who lost his life when she was finally taken.

instead of taking the wine train to Santa Cruz ,an expensive tourist trap, take a train at the great Stacíon Central ,at the centre of Santiago,to San Fernando (it's the same train to Chillan).
Buy the tickets in advance because they don't have to many schedules. The trip is very confortable and beautiful as well ,since you are with the Cordilheiras dos Andes right beside you all the way long.
Also call Mr.Rodolfo Orellana,a nice taxi driver that stops every day at the bus terminal of San Fernando.his numbers are 09 2864039 or 09 2864039.Negotiate a full day fare in advance. He's a fair guy.
He took us to Santa Cruz , we had an appointment at the Viu Manent ,lunch at the restaurant Panpan Vinovino, and a late wine degustation at the Viña Casa Silva .Great wine ,great peopleand great landscapes.
He was very kind and patient.
Dont miss this one day trip.It was our best moments at Chile.

Gold was found east of Porvenir in 1879, gold seekers flocked here from Chile and Croatia.
Yields were small and the rush had ended by 1909.
You can see several of the old sites as well as some of the equipment used.

Drive across the pampas of Tierra del Fuego to Lago Deseado. This was a beautiful location and we would have liked to have done some birding here but the rain wouldm't stop. Lago Deseado was the end of the line for us. There was construction nearby on a new road that would take you to Argentina but it wasn't completed. One has to wonder if this road was being built for loggers and not for anglers.

Lago Blanco is 227 kilometre from Povenir. It has very interesting scenery. It is surrounded by wooded hillsides, with the Darwin mountain range in the background. It is not unusual to see groups of Guanacos, or see magnificent condors soaring overhead. We were told a pair of Condors have their nest there.
The lake is known to have large spotted trout. Fishing in this part of Chile is a well kept secret, until now. Sorry Stallone.
