 main square by cbeaujean 100km from antofagasta,on the panamericana,some kms after bifurcation to calama. a moving visit....a strange feeling. beguins in the 20's for saltpetre exploitation. in activity between 1924 and 1938,lived to 7000 inhabitants. deserted in 1938,because of close of saltpetre activity. in 1971:national monument under pinochet's dictatorship:concentration camp since 1991,in restoration by goethe institut. visit square,church,market,school,hospital,theater closed on tuesdays. Well first of all a visit to Pomaire was recommended to me by a Chilean professor of mine. It's a town famous for all its pottery and such products. It's not a big town, but once you get there you find one or two very long street-long markets, both sides all the way down -- lots of really nice, neat, things from pottery to toys or gadgets to little instruments and purses or clothing items.
