Temuco - Mapuche Homeland

I stayed in Temuco for one week to visit the local BASF branch. Not only did I have a good time with these mostly German-rooted people on our trips to various farms around the city, I also liked the city a lot. Most (Chilean) tourist go directly to the area of Pucon, the lakes and volcanoes, but the city is quite unique as still many Mapuche Indians live here. They were the last to defend their territory against the Spaniards, speak their own language and are still a very proud people. They pretty much live in their own world on one side of the river and it is rather hard for tourists like me to get in touch.Still, it's great to see they still keep up many traditions and btw this gives the city the certain something.There's 2 more street scene pics in the Travelogue

Magellanic Penguin Colony of Seno Otway

Punta Arenas, the capital of region XII, is home to two of the largest penguin colonies in southern Chile. Each year from November through to January the 150,000 strong army of Magellenic penguins, named after the Magallenes region in which they breed, arrive at the Seno Otway (Otway Sound) and on Isla Magdalene on the Chilean coast to meet and mate. The Magellanic penguin (sometimes called the Jackass penguin) is similar in appearance to a typical penguin but is distinguished by two black bands running along the front surface of its neck. They are found in a variety of habitats including woodland, sand dunes, grassy hills and open beach. Their diet consists mainly of small fish and marine crustaceans and their chief enemy is the Southern Sea Lion. The Dominican Gull and Giant Petrel also provide a threat, feeding on the penguins chicks and eggs.We were there possibly to early in the...

Puerto Eden

This small village is the only village between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales. The inhabitants have suffered quite a bit, since a sort of alge has spread and infected muscels, prawns and other sea animals. To eat infected food means to die within 5 minutes time!So this means, that people in Puerto Eden - fishermen in former times - are now suffering a lot and tourism seems to be the only source of income......

Fray Jorge NP - Cloud Magic

The Fray Jorge NP definitely is not among the most popular picks of Chile visitors. It is located at the coast in the socalled "Norte Chica" - the little North. Good to combine with a visit at Valle del Elqui and La Serena.This is a National Park, empty of people and full of cactusses and breathtaking cloud magic. It's were the coastal fogs meet the coastal range. As long as you stay on the cactus side, you enjoy sun and blue skys. Taking the road to the peak of the coastal range you already see the clouds hiding behind. At the top - this is a steep dust road, we had to push our car on some parts.... - take out your sweater and enjoy the view out of and on the clouds and the constant movement of the holes between. This is on TV in Chile ! Like a mix of the worst soaps you've ever watched, about relations between men and women, of course ! The funniest is that when something happy or "terrible" happens, the announcing music is so loud you don't even understand why the event is funny or terrible, as you can't hear what the actors are saying !C'est le nom d'une serie chilienne, bien sur ! C'est une sorte de mix des pires soaps que vous avez jamais vus ! Le pire, c'est la musique assourdissante annoncant un evenement tragique ou comique : on comprend meme plus ce que les acteurs disent !

Guanacos up close and personal

If you have time to spend around the Laguna Amarga entrance to the park (I did while waiting for the bus to arrive), the guanacos may come by in the nearby field to graze. If you are nimble you can get very close to get a good picture and maybe even catch a family. Guanacos are camelids that are related to alpacas, llamas, vicuñas and, of course, camels. They have defied domestication unlike most of their cousins but they are a favorite prey of the puma.

4400m highparinacota is classified national historic monument.today,nearly empty...even if there is a school (SEE TRAVELOGUE)was a stopping place during herds transhumance between arica and potosi.nice church,built in 1789,wooden beams made of queñua imputrescible.no one nail!separated clocktower.
