Don't miss some places outside Santiago...

by Saldi

The village of Pirque is one of the canyon's gateways, with the Viña Concha y Toro wine tours, where you can visit our central vineyards and taste the fabulous flavor of our wines. A tributary canyon on the Maipo has been taken over by the Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo, one of the closest nature reserves to the capital and home to the endangered Chilean iguana. Viña del MarChile's premier beach resort is just a two-hour bus ride north of Santiago. The commercial center is also known as the Garden City, for reasons that are immediately obvious to any visitor. It isn't a sinuously terraced marvel like the city port of Valparaíso (don't miss it!), so its two distinct sectors of traditional mansions and commercial activity are easy to navigate. White-sand beaches (and cold water) stretch from the town center northward to the overbuilt suburbs of Reñaca and Concón. . Other than aquatic...

I doubt that many people visit, but the village of Pomaire is worth a trip (about 80kms west of Santiago - hiring a car is the best way to get there). It is a ceramic village where they make all kinds of things - the punch bowl we bought there is one of a prize possessions from the trip.

25 km north of Puerto Natales is Cueva del Milodón. It's a 30 m high and 200 m deep cavern. A replica of an prehistoric mylodon reminds of the remnants of such an animal, found here in the 1800s. It's an organized half day trip from Natales, but it's better to go there with your own car. It's just worth going if you've got plenty of time.

Chiloe is half an island close to Porto Mont that many people don't reach. If you really want to see the life of people in Chile (off the beaten path...), if you want to eat local food, see local celebration etc. You'll find them here. besides, there is great sea food around here - for all the sea food lovers!See travelogue for pictures of Chiloe.

This is the observatory at Tololo. As it is cloudy only a few days a year it's great to study the stars.Tololo lies on the road from La Serena to Vicuña and can be seen from the mainroad. Scientist from all over the world come here to make their studies. It's like a good restaurant, they have to book places well in advance in order to get a glimpse of the stars and planets.Well worth a visit if you happen to be in the neighbourhood.

Bomberas de San Bernardo!! I would love to be a firefighter!! My best friend volunteers in her hometown and someday real soon...I must look into doing it here...In Chile the fire department consists of volunteers and with a demanding schedule. The community donates food and money to support these brave men and women.

The flea markets were a sensory over load! You could find everything there...music, fish, clothes, furniture, medicine, etc. The produce in Chile was something of its own I must say. I would see apples that were the size of cantalope, carrots as thick as cucumbers...It the land of the giant fruit and vegetables! Chile exports the majority of its produce...much of is what we receive here. The more average produce exported and the over/under sized food remains. But that isn't always the case. I am not a tomato fan in general...but those tomatos are sure tasty! tasty! I am seen here with a friend I made ...David. He was selling tomatoes for ....let's see back then it would be about $600 pesos to the dollar..and a kilo is 2.2 lbs...so you do the math. He was having a real difficult time selling his produce and I made a bet I could sell every tomato he had! THANK GOODNESS I did not have to...

by asle_hj

Take a day off and spend some time really relaxing and looking at some of the small wonders you can find in Chile - like the beautiful flowers. This one was found in the 'green' Lake District between Ensenada (on the shore of Lago Llanquihue) and Ralun.

THE HIGHEST POINT IN CHILE IS...

by marko727

THE HIGHEST POINT IN CHILE IS OJOS DEL SALADO. ELEVATION IS 22,539 FEET (6870 METERS). HERE IS SOME INFO ON IT FROM THE WEB: 4WD trucks can be rented in Copiapo' for about US$110 per day. If you make a reservation from here, it's $150. I can't imagine getting a trailer to the Tejos Refuge! It's enough of a challenge getting a Toyota 4WD there. We sunk into the sand several times and had to back up, never making it above the Andino Refuge. Andino Refuge is at about 16700 feet, and is as far as you can drive without heroic efforts. I saw only one truck make it to Tejos Refuge at 18900 feet, and they had to let the air out of their tires and go cross-country around the sand drifts on the 'road'. Then they stole climbing gear from a German group and took off. Really. It would be possible to put tents above 20000 feet, reducing the summit day from 3700 feet to 2500 feet. No one made it to the...
