Puerto Varas - to Argentina...

by canguru

Puerto Varas - to Argentina via the Vicente Perez Rosales International CrossingGetting there and away: There are two ways to do this crossing:-1. Pay (approx. US$100) to 'Cruce de Lagos' bus/boat company (office opposite the casino in Puerto Varas) and they will get you all the way to Bariloche via the various bus & ferry journeys. Click here for a dynamic Flash look at the journey Or,2. Do it independently (on the cheap) over a period of 2-4 days - you'll have to camp and take all your own food with you. Buy a one way boat ticket for the first lake crossing only between Petrohué and Peulla. You can also buy the bus ticket with them to take you to Petrohué or do that part independently also. Once in Puella, you'll have to go through immigration. Spend the first night here. It's a 27km hike from here to Puerto Frias. Take 2-3 days to do it. Camp wherever you like. Arrive at Puerto Frias...

Laguna San Rafael National...

by canguru

Laguna San Rafael National ParkWhat's there?: The 1.74 million hectares of this massive park are found at the edge of the Patagonian ice sheet (Campo Hielo Norte) and include fjords, forests and glaciers calving into the ocean. It contains some of the most outstanding scenery in the world and captures the rugged beauty of the area of Patagonia. The park was established in 1959 and has since become the most popular destination for tourists in the entire region, even with the difficulty of travel and the famously rough Patagonian weather. Laguna San Rafael is a nearly-enclosed inlet of the Pacific Ocean that is full of floating icebergs that have calved from the San Rafael Glacier. For those who venture ashore and spend some time, the area has a wide variety of birds (albatross, ducks, and penguins) as well as fantastic sea life, including sea otters, sea lions and elephant seals.Location:...

A trip to Conguillio National...

by richiecdisc

A trip to Conguillio National Park is well worth the hassle of getting there. A local bus from Temuco will bring you to Melipeuco (sp?) where at the local Hosteria you can arrange a ride out to the park. There's no local transportation. Try and meet someone on the bus to Melipeuco. Chances are if it's a gringo and he's going there, they'll be looking for a ride out to the park too and you can share the fare. Our guy brought us out and picked us up a few days later for $20 each. He even gave us a great tour en route. It's very lush on one side and a volcanic wasteland on the other. Snow capped vulcan Llaim and the beautiful monkey puzzle tree are the real treasures. The campground was empty in December and right on the beach. Do the walk up to the ridge, the views are magnificent.

I don't know whether I should call this off the beaten path or not. Basically Torres del Paine national park looks quite off the beaten path, but on the other hand it's getting increasingly popular. Here I'm putting up a map for any hiking enthusiasts that want to see what they're getting themselves into. The most popular and also the nicest hike is the so called 'W', and it connects the following spots: mirador las Torres - refugio los Cuernos - campamento Italiano - valle Frances - refugio Pehoe - refugio Grey. If you use your imagination you can see why it's called W.

Coquimbo. A maritime/fishing community near La Serena. The open stalls, and little eating places, along with the men working on fishing boats. Selling the catch of the day, etc. Stayed above a 'bar', the room was clean and the nightly noise bareable.

by mmcguire

I would say, when visiting Chile avoid the big cities, as when you see one they are basically all the same - although Santiago does have charm, visit the smaller towns such as Pucon, Puerto Varas, Villarica, Tome etc. They show you the true Chilean lifestyle, the pace is very relaxed and you won't get bored because there are alot of cultural and adventure activities through the year

The Deserto de Atacama is a must see. It's far away from Santiago, almost 1400 Km - 22 hours in a bus - but it was great. The city of San Pedro de Atacama is small and there are many hostels.Check my travelogue for more info.
