Packing List

If you're traveling cheap, you're doing some walking. You can't walk very well with a suitcase in your hand. Take a guess. Good rain gear is essential in Patagonia. It rains a lot. Good boots that are water proof (yeah, right), ditto. It rains a lot. The wind will blow your mind. That's no play on words. Bring toilet paper to the cheaper places to stay. They often don't supply it though it seems to be changing. A wide angle to take in the vast landscapes that make up Patagonia. Decent zoom for wildlife. Lots of film. Bring a tent. Everyone said I didn't need one, but I did. You need one to do the Torres del Paine circuit. You can't rent anything as good as one you can bring from home. It rains a lot, you want something that will keep you dry. Well, sort of dry. ;-)

Backpack, of course. For hiking in Torres del Paine National Park don't forget to bring waterproof gear, either a goratex jacket or a raincoat, and sturdy shoes. If you don't you could easily end up with hypothermia if you're caught in bad weather. When it's raining it can get very cold and the wind factor really adds to the chill. On the other side, if you're lucky enough to see sunshine, you could easily walk around in t-shirts in the (southern) summer. We experienced all ranges of weather during our 6-day hike: from peacful, sunny 20 C to rain, snow and hurricane force winds (up to 150 kph). Don't forget a warm sleeping bag, even if you're not camping, because refugios don't provide blankets.

no suitcase - a big travel bag is enough South of Chile in the Chilean Summer still tends to be cool and wet (day temperatures from 8 to 16 Celsius). You need rain-protection gear, windjacket, sweater, good and waterproof footwear, camping gear if you intend to visit National Parks (Hotels in the Paine National Park, for instance, are outragously expensive) you can get anything on the spot - for ship passages on the open South Pacific get some medication (excellent products available in all pharmacies on the Chilean Coast)

Rain, rain, rain!!!

I have never experienced so much rain as in southern Chile - and this reason is known for the VERY high precipitation. So if you go south, be sure to take rain gear with you - it is worth it!

Bring a jacket, if traveling from June - September. It's their winter. Bring enough film!

If you're visiting the south, you should take winter's clothing, because it's rainy and cold. Don't forget to bring your camera! This is a picture of the Flower's Clock, Viña del Mar (V Region)
