Huemules - the Chilean deer
  • Tip Rating:
  • Huemules (hippocamelus bisulcus) is a distinct relative of our nothern hemisphere deer. They have once been spread around southern Patagonia in huge crowds, but increased civilization and forest fires have cut their population very much back. Huemules are very shy and it is not usual to spot them.
On our way back to Coyhaique we have been extremely lucky to see this one.

There is many wildlife on the trek, one of which we saw was the black woodpecker
(carpintero negro or campephilus magellanicus), easy to recognice as the male one by his red cap. He is different from his relatives on northern hemisphere, as he is bigger.

Wherever it is wet and the climate moderate yet humid, these little flamy red flowers of botellita (mitraria coccinea) are found all over. They are epiphytes usually grow over dead wood or fallen tree trunks and add much color to the scenery

    Wild orchids everywhere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wild orchids are also found all over the place. I don't even know if they are really of ochid type. They are usually white and grow in the more denser parts of the forests, in moderate not too humid climate.
