While it is interesting to see the giant monuments errected for the rich people like Memendez and Sara Braun it is a lot more touching to walk as well into the side-parts of the cemetery and see the graves of the ordinary people, especially touching are the graves of babies, that will have small windows with all kinds of toys etc.
Stray-dogs seem to be a common problem in Chile and you will see them at many places. Some of them are really clever and they made the surroundings of the Magellan-monument their home, sitting on the benches and begging for food at the tourists. At least they are mostly not agressive but rather intimidated and will run away, when you shout at them or make a step forward.
The couple from Germany that I met in their motorhome in Punta Arenas told me they are always glad to find such dogs, they will give them some food and while they are going into town the dog will guard their motorhome and let nobody else get close to the car than the owners.
Kiss or touch the foot of the indian
sitting below the monument of Magellan
and you will return to Patagonia !
That is a custom that many people seem to follow and when you take a closer look at my photograph you will see that the foot is a lot more shining than the rest of the sculpture.
For a very long time the native population of Patagonia was simply killed like animals by the settlers and one of the justifications for that genocide was the fact that Charles Darwin had called them "real ape-men" when he came in 1832 by his ship "Beagle" to Patagonia.
You will find the Magellan - monument in the very centre of Plaza Muñoz Gamero, surrounded by local merchants selling their souvenirs etc.
No matter what your traveller books/guide tell you. In Punta Arenas we Chileans do not tip more than 10%. Sometimes we don't even tip at all. If you did not like the service (because it was slow or something like that) just do not tip and no one will give you bad looks.
In Punta Arenas there is a legend: any person who visits it, has to kiss to do the indian ritual and then, luck will bring him/her back (don't do this if you do not want to come back :)
There is a monument in the center of the main square. Explorer Ferndinand of Magellan is on top, but there are other 4 in the lower area. One of them is a Selknam native holding a bow. His foot is really low so, tourist come close and kiss his toe (you will notice that it's really 'polished' after so many years of toe kissing) because the legend says those who kiss it will come back one day.
Interesting type of flower decorated the entire city, I like the colors and the shape, you will see it all around!!!!!!!

The dead are places in individual crypts or condos.
They have windows and inside the glass is pictures of the loved one, momentos, and artificial flowers.
A person touch I thought instead of just placing a cement slab at the end.
This seems to be a local passtime.
Most everything is decorated with Grafitti.
Is this a local custom? I don't know
It is very unattractive and maybe should be dealt with.
