Small restaurants: Bargain lunch
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are many small restaurants offering lunch for 1000 peso and up (about $1.50 US)
The menus are small but the food is very good.

Suco: Smoothies, Pannini and Hot Homemade Soups.
  • Satisfaction:
  • Don't let the rather plain facade of this little restaurant fool you. I think that this may be the only place in Santiago to get a real, U.S. style, thick, health food smoothie. The owner, a young American woman named Miriam Harrison, uses flaked ice and a variety of local fruits to create a wide array of these delicious drinks. The restaurant is clean, and the employees attentive and eager to please. Most of the young staff seem to be proficient in English, and the specials are written out daily on colorful chalkboards. Hot, homemade soups were the order of the day, as I was there in June, which is wintertime in Santiago. Ms. Harrison and crew also makes homemade cookies and muffins daily, as well as the sauces for the sandwiches. Her pesto sauce is a delight, rich and thick with the olive oil delivering the basil flavor perfectly. Likewise the tandoori paste for the chicken panini that I had one day. Freshness of product seems to be an important part of this restaurant's theme; everything that I had there excited the taste buds. As I am partial to a good cafe latte, I ordered one here and received a hot, well flavored beverage with just the right amount of foam.

My favorite smoothie was "Banana All The Way",,,lots of banana, vanilla yogurt and soy milk. Unfortunately, I was not in Chile long enough to try all the different menu items at Suco. Whatever they have going with the pesto, I recommend! If the weather is cold, you must go with one of the soups; they are first class and a good value.

    Suizoloco: Brand new Swiss restaurant
  • Satisfaction:
  • Being J_P_B´s 30th birthday the choice was something homely to eat. After seaching on the local newspapers food review site this place came up, no reviews but hell we thought we´d try it out.

On arriving, Daniel, (maybe the owner or partner) came over to chat to us and was very puzzeled how we´d come accross the place, it had only been open for 3 weeks and was not well advertised yet.

We were made very welcome and the whole meal was great, plenty of wine and coffes later we left having had a really enjoyable night. Good luck to making it a sucess Daniel.

Check out the menu on the web site it´ll give you an idea of what you can get and the cost. We had the Pate (can´t find the accent on this key board!!) starter, Fondue and Chocolate cake / sorbet for desert all of which made for a tasty meal.

Verace: Best pizzas near Bellas Artes
  • Satisfaction:
  • Verace is just your regular ordinary pizza place. Nothing fancy, with the pizza makers right on the window, and some 4 to 6 tables (without counting the bar), the place is cozzy if you feel hungry. What's best about it is not the place, but the incredibly tasty pizzas. No matter what the place looks like (if you're picky), breathe, calm down, and go in. You'll be amazed.

Just try any pizza. They're all so damn good. And, they're so cheap! $3.000 (around 6 US dollars), for a pizza and a soft beverage. And if you're not that hungry, you can always buy one or two slides (less than 2 dollars each).
Oh, and for dessert, do try the bitter chocolate ice-cream. The perfect end to an increadible meal.

Wall Street: Suecia Section of Providencia
The Suecia section of Providencia is a walking street area. Go to General Holley street and you will find many outdoor restaurants, but my favorite is Wall Street.

The food is good, but the location for people watching is better! This is a great place to have a beer, a Salmon dinner and watch the world go by.

The Salmon, Steaks and Hamburgres are good. The best thing is a chicken dish made with peppers, onions and mushrooms in a wooden rimmed plate. The center of the plate is stone which is heated and the meal is cooked in it. Excellent!

As a vegetarian, Santiago De Chile was a very frustrating place to eat. With meat being the ubiquitous staple, discovering the Santiago city center hotel majestic Hindu restaurant, was like finding an Oasis in the desert.

While the decor is nothing special, the service is amazing and the food, even better.

As a big fan of the Indian food in Canada, I tried my favorite dish, vegetable vindaloo (called vegetable bind aloo here). This dish served up all the spiciness of its counterpart I'd eaten in Canada, but was somehow unique. The chana masala was also a wonderful blend of spices. Delicious!
