Coco Loco is a fine and traditional restaurant located in Las Condes. As ridiculous as it may sound (Coco Loco means "Crazy Coconut" in Spanish) it is a very respectable. It serves one of the best seafoods in Chile and the Lobster Thermidor is mouth Watering. The reaturant is very cozy and you can even sit in a traditional chilean boat and eat there!
Lobster Tehrmidor Locos ( its a kind of seafood)

This reatuarant started working during the 80's, it was a place where opositors to the dictatorship used to gather, and they even had to say a passord for getting in.

The late 80's was a time when somewhat rustic, informal, cozy and intimate restaurant-pubs became popular among college students and left-wing people who opposed to the then government. All that gave those restaurants a special atmosphere, while their patrons shared a certain "complicity" just for the fact of being there. Music was a characteristic feature of them too (the so-called Nueva Trova, for instance), and although these days that kind of music may be a bit "out of style", it brings good memories (for locals) to feel "there" again. Restaurant N'aitun (a Mapuche word meaning to release, to set free) is a faithful example of that special warm and intimate ambience, where people gathered there to talk and listen to (usually) live music and have a simple but tasty lunch or dinner. N'aitun's management is quite open-minded and gay-friendly (but NOT specifically gay-oriented; it is rather leftist-oriented...); lesbians seem to like it. It is located one block downstreet of Plaza Brasil (Santiago's alternative bohemian quarter, and a 10 minutes' walk from my apartment) and holds a more traditional restaurant on its street-level floor. There's also a small art gallery and a bookshop (used and new) inside the restaurant.
Fine cheese and ham snacks, salads and more elaborate dishes are good, but their excellent sandwiches are particularly good in size and price. Set meals at lunchtime are excellent value and quality too. Unfortunately, it seems like that on Fridays and Saturdays, they run short of non-alcoholic beverages quite soon, so you should try to secure yours, if you don't drink alcohol. Almost a complete novelty here, two small and new restaurants are an interesting way for Chileans to sample those Greek and Turkish delicacies that more travelled others -how I miss the Middle East...- have enjoyed in their very origin. In PROVIDENCIA 1457 is DÖNER HOUSE, which specializes in (what else?) kebap döners and their variations. Also, Turkish salads and yoghurt (but not ayran, which is not compatible with local regulations) are served here too. Two blocks to the west (downstreet), on the corner of Providencia and Roman Diaz is WAYA'S GYROS, which specializes in... Greek gyros. Both are reasonably priced and open from 10 AM till 11 PM or so (later on Fridays and weekends), although a bit above the average Chilean pricing (after all, gyros and kebaps are exotic delicacies here) but worthwhile anyways. Both, of course, suitable for homesick Greek or Turkish travellers.
Kebaps and gyros, naturally (shawarmas can be found in the West Patronato quarter, and around Bellavista). Also, Turkish sweets and Greek salads are a great pleasure there (but in their respective places: no Turkish sweets at Waya's, and no Greek salads at Döner House...). Service is great and very friendly in both places (although I'd like better to be either in Greece or Turkey...) Leave a Comment Theme: Middle EasternComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Providencia avenue, at blocks 1200 and 1400Directions: To get there: take the subway and alight at Salvador (for Waya's) or Manuel Montt (for Döner House) station, and walk one block upstreet in both cases. It have been for several years the best Peruvian food in Santiago. If you see it, inside may be ,is not appealing, but the food is unvelibeble. The owner is a peruvian Chef Alfredo Aramburu, they use great ingredients, a lot of sea food.
Try the filete a lo macho ( steak and seafood ), or the piqueo al fresco, or sample of appetizers, or tiradito al fresco ,( Peruvian stile of sashimi.) pisco sour is very good. If your are seeking for a southamerican culinary experience, this is the place. In a 19th Century old House this unique place as provide us with a great evening of Chilean Traditional Food and Great Music with and outdoor Patio Quincho of Parrilladas and a beautiful Horno de Barro (Clay Oven). The Empanadas are fantastic with a special great flavor in the mix of meat, onions, boiled eggs, raisins and fresh olives, a great pie cooked in the outdoor oven. The parrilladas are prepared in front of your eyes and you can talk to the Parrillero (Chef) and ask some tips in how to prepare them, great experience and let me tell you that the flavors and seasoning of the meats are out of this world. Great Salad Bar and many tipical dishes in the menu, desserts and more. Sea food dishes also and a house made marinera soup. In one word a great place to know and understand a little more of Chilean Culture, the owner speak English and have a lot of history tales to share from trips in the country side and recomendations of places to visit, a guided tour of Santiago and Chile with the sound of spanish guitars.
Lomo a lo pobre, was great with a good size portion of meat 200 gramos, with fried onion, french fries and 2 eggs in top, uf... what a dish. The Parrilladas al Plato give us the opportunity to taste Bife de Lomo (Steak), Longanizas(Pork Sausage) and Prietas (Blood-Sausage) with the choice of Pollo Asado (Barbeque Chicken) or Chuletas de Cerdo(Pork Ribs) served wit a choice of Potatoes or Rice. Salads are great and fresh, Choclo (Corn), Apio Palta (Celery with Avocados), Lettuce and Coliflower, Potatoes Salad and many more. An the King of Chilean Asados "Pebre" a great salsa with Pan Amasado, what more can you ask ffor one evening with great Chilean Music and Floor Dance. The ambience and surroindings are great and no waiting to be served, I recomend this place because they make me feel special and welcome. Piola is now a Buenos Aires' trademark. It just opened a restaurant here in Santiago with the same pizza and pasta that made the original one so famous. Italian pasta (from Italy) and wood oven baked pizzas, plus a great decoration, makes this restaurant a must when arriving to Santiago. Do make a reservation, as it can get pretty crowded.
All pizzas are great. Just choose. The pasta is very tasteful (try the gnocci!!!), and don't forget the dessert: the icecream comes in a baked tulip that is great! There are several alternatives in Chile: RESTAURANTS, which serve set meals for lunch (“MENU”) on weekdays for a reduced price (about US$2). This will typically be either a plate with a thin meatloaf accompanied with rice/French fries/mashed potatoes/spaghetti (one of these, not all...) and salad. This may also include a glass of soft drink and bread. A 10% tip is expected, but not compulsory. You may find this in big cities, in downtown. But, if you go a bit away from the center of the city, or go into smaller towns, you’ll find that this set meal may turn into a hearty lunch: there is served CAZUELA (a soup with meat or chicken, vegetables, pumpkin and rice), ESTOFADO (a casserole made of meat and vegetables) and other varieties. In coastal towns, fried fish (PESCADO FRITO) and seafood (MARISCOS) are found in the “menus” for the same US$2. This is only for lunchtime, and after hours (say, after 4 PM) only ‘a la carte’ can be had, and for a price several times higher. Forget about dinner in a restaurant at reduced prices, no matter where you would be.
FAST FOOD There are MacDonalds (cheaper ‘combos’ go from US$1,40), Burger Kings, and others of the same ilk, plus several local versions of them (Mateos, Doggis, Los Pollitos Dicen –“As the chicken say”- ,etc.) which are not bad at all, are quite cheap and sometimes have the alternative of quite healthy food amid all the fat. All the above mentioned have a ‘vegetarian’ alternative for almost the same price (it’s about 15% more expensive). Several fast food joints can be found in Santiago in a place called “Food Garden”, located in the very centre of the city, in the block bound by San Antonio, Huérfanos, Estado and Agustinas streets. There is a wide variety of food here (Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Mexican and Chilean among others). Also, a mammoth cybercafe with ultrafast connections shares the other half of this building, located one block and a half southeast from Plaza de Armas. An excellent alternative to all these, is the chain of restaurants named SCHOPDOG: they offer a ‘homemade-like’ meal at anytime of the day (9AM till 10 PM) for prices starting at US$1,60. These offers may include a steak, French fries, fried egg and onion (BISTEC A LO POBRE) and a dessert (ice cream), or a maize casserole (PASTEL DE CHOCLO) made of corn and ground meat and served in a ceramic pot that’s maybe one of the tastiest local meals in Chile, besides being very filling. Schopdog is found in several places in Santiago’s downtown and other cities. This is a restaurant run by a gay couple and it has a very friendly atmosphere. The food is great and it has a very good name in the city. I had dinner here once and loved the place. The staff is extremely friendly!
My favourite dish is the Paella Valenciana. A great Paella with fresh seafood, something Chile is known for. The service was excellent and the food tasted great. I was even treated to the chilean national drink, a Pisco Sour. Leave a Comment
