Kevin getting ready to fly out of North America! by Jefie, 1 more photos LAN Airlines is the main carrier in Chile and one of the largest in South America. They have partnerships with many different airline companies around the world – in our case, we booked our ticket with American Airlines and connected with LAN at JFK, and on the way back we transferred in Miami. The plane was quite modern and comfortable with a nice selection of onboard entertainment (lots of movies, CDs, video games, etc.), and the staff was friendly and efficient. The food was alright and our flights were on time, even the one that landed in Miami between two hurricanes! I wouldn’t hesitate to fly with them again, the 12h flight went by surprisingly fast :o) Leave a Comment

Flying Air France by filipdebont I had booked a trip organised by the Dutch Travel agency Djoser (www.djoser.nl), so the flight was in the package. At first it was a 4 weeks trip but I extended the trip by one week, as I also wanted to visit Easter Island while I was in Santiago. My flight schedule : July 12th : Schiphol Amsterdam - Ch De Gaulle Paris (dep 20.50, arr 22.05) July 13th : Ch. De Gaulle Paris - Santiago (dep 23.15, arr 7.25) The return flight was also with Air France, but from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Service on board was excellent and very friendly, with Champagne as aperitif and a good meal. Flight time from Paris to Santiago was indeed 14 hours (quiet long) Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

by astridcontre From abroad of the country, a lot of airlines are arriving and departuring from our airport: LAN Chile (www.lanchile.cl) Aerolíneas Argentinas American Airlines Lufthansa United Airlines Iberia Swiss Air The airport is like 30- 45 minutes from downtown. It depends of the hour. There are official buses from the airport to the center of the town, you can find taxis which are a little expensive but not much if you need to get your place soon (about 20 US$) To go the areas close to Santiago I think renting a car is a good idea. Or...buses. Inside Santiago, metro is the king in transportation ¿Do you want to find a street, an area or service? Visit http://www.mapcity.com/santiago/ Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

The route between the Pacific and South America is the route with least competition unfortunately making it one of the most expensive to fly on. I am a New Zealander who lives in Santiago and so fly the route frequently. The two direct flights are either a codeshare flight run by LAN (www.lan.com)with Qantas as their partner that starts in Sydney, stops in Auckland and ends in Santiago. The other is Aerolineas Argentinas which also starts in Sydney, stops in Auckland and continues to Buenos Aires. Of the two, the Aerolineas flight is usually the cheaper one however the quality of service etc is worse than LAN. Personally I would only take the LAN flight. I have heard that Qantas have announced plans to introduce a flight direct between Sydney and Buenos Aires but I don't think this flight is in operation yet. If you are purchasing your ticket in NZ I suggest you go to www.zuji.co.nz and check out the flight options for the route. I used this site to buy my parents tickets last year and ended up getting them a "Qantas" flight one way and a "LAN" flight the other way (essentially the same flight though because all the planes are run by LAN). If you are planning a trip around South America then it is worthwhile considering flying to South America with a One World carrier. LAN offers the South America Airpass to travellers reaching South America with LAN or another OneWorld airline. Check the conditions, because you may save a lot of money for domestic flights. Note: You must have an international ticket purchased in order to get your South America Airpass. The South America Airpass must be purchased at least 14 days prior to the departure date. Check out http://plane.lan.com/promociones/data/norteamerica/us/todo_el_mundo/sudamerica_airpass/index-en-us.html There is also an One World South American Air Pass, which sometimes has better deals than LAN. Check out: www.oneworld.com/ow/air-travel-options/single-continent-fares/visit-south-america One World carriers that fly to South America include British Airways, LAN, Qantas, American Airlines and Iberia. Plaza O'Higgins, Valparaiso by TheWanderingCamel Getting to Valparaiso from Santiago could hardly be be easier - or cheaper. Buses leave every 15 minutes from the Terminal San Borja, near the Central Station and the one and a half hour journey costs only $7. Seats are allocated, the buses are clean, very comfortable with reclining seats , seem to be properly maintained and are bang on time - we were so impressed. There are several companies operating this route, all charge the same fare and would appear to offer the same efficient service. The terminal in Valparaiso is on Av Pedro Montt, near the Congress Building and Plaza O'Higgins. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The sight of all those steep hills that Valparaiso is built on is rather daunting - but climbing up is not a problem. There are 15 ascensores dotted around the city - some have been operating since the 1880s and all are at least 50 years old. How many thousands and thousands of times must the little cars made the journey up and down those steep tracks? Do take a ride on at least two or three - the views from the top are fantastic, and the funiculars themselves are so quirky. You'll see signs pointing to the terminii that are mostly tucked away in back streets. It only costs a few cents for each ride. You can come down in the ascensores (do they become decensores then?), usually for a few pesos less than going up, but finding your way down the steep stairways and narrow alleys is fun too and can lead you to some really interesting spots - we found the studio of an artist and her glass-worker husband quite accidentally that way, and ended up buying a painting.
