Mountain Biking has become a huge activity in Santigo. There are really easy paths for begginers, and there are some that are quite hard, for the pros.
If you'd like to enjoy a good climb on your bike, then an easy downhill, then try the Cerro San Cristobal. There are 3 ways to start:
1. From La Piramide, in Las Condes, on Americo Vespucio Ave.
2. From Pedro de Valdivia Ave, just follow the street until you get to the bottom of the hill
3. From Pio Nono st, in Bellavista.
It's an easy climb, with lots of bikers on Saturdays and Sundays. I'd recommend going in the morning. It can get lonely during the evening (not recommendable).
If you want to go down not on the road, try going with someone who knows the path, otherwise you might end in the street down the hill.
Other good mbiking path is Huinganal in La Dehesa district and Santuario de la Naturaleza in Las Condes, close to the Andes.
Equipment:
Bring your bike, a good helmet, and if it's summer, lots of water.
The ski resorts, which can be reached by bus or car, are located less that an hour's drive from Santiago. Farellones-EI Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado are all situated on the slopes of the Andean mountains. From June to October these resorts, as well as others in Chile, are visited by both foreign and Chilean ski fanatics, because of the excellent slopes, good snow, nice weather and modern infrastructure.
Also near Santiago, but 145 kilometers northeast is Portillo with its traditional hotel of international fame, overlooking the beautiful Del Inca Lagoon.
Equipment:
Skiing/snowboarding equipment
Skiing during a white-out in 4 feet of powder was intense!!! I recommend staying under the lift so that you can guide yourself down the mountain and back to the safety of the resort. Remember when the clouds clear there should be blue skies and pristine powder!!
Equipment:
2-way radios tuned in to resort and other skiers channels, two members from my group skied off trail and thankfully had 2-ways to call for help via the Snowcats!
