Casa Colorada, Santiago

The Casa Colorada, built in 1769, is one of the most nicely preserved colonial buildings in Santiago. Again, not only has it survived the city's extreme modernization, it also made it through several devasting earthquakes. It was designed by Joseph de la Vega for Mateo de Toro Zambrano y Ureta, Royal Gorvernor of Chile and one of the most important architects of the country's fight for independence. Casa Colorada now houses the Museum of Santiago (open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday; Admission 35 Chilean pesos - about 70 cents), but as we were running short on time and had read some pretty discouraging reviews, we didn't bother going in. We did however stop for a few minutes to take some pictures and admire the house's unique architecture.

Casa Colorada (red house) is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in September 18th, 1810. It's a national monument.
It's only half block away from the Plaza de Armas, but I don't quite remember the name of the street. If you are standing at the center of the square, and have the cathedral on your right, go straight foward and take the street to your left. Half block away you'll find this building.

Casa Colorada / The Red House is at one side the city-museum of Santiago nowadays and at the other side it was the place, where Chile got its independance in September 18th, 1810, because the Declaration of Independance was signed there.
