The Natural Monument "La Portada" is located in the II Region , to 25 km to the north of the city of Antofagasta. A beautiful arch of geological origin. The area was declared Natural Monument in 1990 and it is administered by Conaf. Due to the earthquake of January, 1998 it was prohibited to lower to the beach and at the foot of the viewing-point, for the possibility of rocky detachments of the cliffs. The arch was a sea bed it does 30 million years, then the sea moved back generating, for erosion, the cliffs and this singular arch of rock.
The monument is really beautiful and the beach is very nice too, but is not recommended to swim in it because the sea can be dangerous in this area, anyway you can take great photographies, enjoy a day near to the beach, walk around or just stay in the Viewing-point where you will also find a restaurant.
It is like 25 minutes from Antogafasta

On the south there is the Bay called Coloso where youu will find a Cove of fishermen, there is good restaurant where to eat fish and seafood to reasonable prices. Here you can also enjoy a ride along the bay.
To be able to come here you will need a car or taxi because there aren't busses, anyway let me know because I can take you to know this place.

The principal square is a nice place to visit, there is always people sitting around talking or watching the kids playing. Here you will also find the Tower of the Clock . It was declared National Monument, it was given by the English colony; the sphere of the clock is a reply of the Bigben of London and his carillon has a similar sound.

The historic Neighborhood is a mix of buildings from the last century. They are opposite to the former port, where is the most ancient wharf (1872). Crossing the street one finds the Ex-customs. The most representative building of the architecture of the epoch where is also the museum.

Avenida Matta (downtown) is closed to traffic, and usually filled with street artists and entertainers on Friday and Saturday nights. Worth a look.

It is called La Portada and just a short drive north of Antofagasta. You can walk down a pack to have a closer view of the rock. About an hour at the rock is about enough. Great for a picture.

When you think of the traditional South American central market, this is what you get. It is cashed with local grocers and restaurants. You can see all the wildness of pigs and cows heads. For a real Chilean lunch, I reccomend Jaime Chicos on the Southwestern side of the building.
