    Visiting the German Pioneer Museum

Following the revolution in Germany in 1848 and the efforts of the Chilean Government to develop the country, many German families were recruited to come settle the land around the Lake Llanquihue. There were several reasons for the governmemnt's eagerness to settle the land. On the one hand, there was an ongoing struggle with some indigenous groups over control of the land, and on the other, to prevent Argentina from extending it's influence into this area. Most of the indigenous population, however, had moved away from this area due to outbreaks of samllpocks and measels to which they were not very resistant.

The whole region has a distinct "German" flavour. Many German surnames have survived but the language did not fare so well; very few still speak it. The Pioneer Museum is a huge outdoor display depicting the early colonisation and farming.

The museum is very easy to find. Frutillar Bajo is only two streets wide. The "main" street along the lake and Vincente Parez Rozales. The museum is located in the latter, on the corner with Carlos Richter which goes to Frutillar Alto.

Frutillar Bajo is a quaint holiday resort on the lake, not to be confused with Frutillar Alto which is some 3 km away and has little to offer the tourist.

This museum needs at least an hour or two. It is quite big and unfortunately not very wheelchair friendly.

    Views of Volcan Osorno

On a clear day the view of Volcan Osorno from Frutillar is stunning. The volcano lies on the other side of the lake and dominates the view. For most of our time in Frutillar, clouds blocked this view so we had to imagine what it looked like. On the morning we left, we went for a quick walk before breakfast and as we were returning the cloud cleared a little - just enough to give us a view of the volcano. It was beautiful!

    The beach

There's a popular beach on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, with a small area of the lake sectioned off for swimming. Frutillar was quite busy when we visited, despite the cloudy weather. And the weather didn't deter the swimmers either. We spent a goo dhour on the beach, which is composed of fine, volcanic sand. I tried going in the water but it was freezing. I've plenty of respect for all those Chileans who were daring enough to brave the waters.
