Osorno is located in the heart of the dairy farming region of Chile. 70% of Chile´s milk production is produced in the Lakes Region. When I travel to Osorno it is usually for work and so I find myself visiting Dairy Farms in the region. There is one agricultural show in Osorno each year called SagoFisur which is around November.more

I came across this little gem of a place in 2008. It is a cute little cafe located inside the cultural center in central Osorno. The owner who attended us was super friendly and very keen to make sure that the items we had ordered were to our liking. I would certainly come here again. The cafe has WiFi available for customers. There are all sorts...more
Dino's is more like a diner than a restaurant. They serve everything from salads and sandwiches through to steak, chicken or pork chops. The restaurant is centrally located on one of the corners of the main square. I like the pork chops with a salad or chips to accompany or the lomito sandwich.more
The Espantapajaros restaurant is located just past Puerto Octay with a view over Lago Llanquihue across to the Osorno volcano. They have animals in the area like llamas and ostriches. The restaurant is cosy inside with a buffet style service that is quick and of excellent quality. The buffet costs 9000 pesos per person. The restaurant is open from...more
This steakhouse a little drive out of town is a well known place in Osorno. The steaks come from the Frigosorno company and are known for their quality cuts. I usually order the Lomo Vetado and the salad bar. They have a trolley of different salad options and so you can pick your own items to make up a salad. Of course I accompany this with a nice...more
This is a cosy restaurant with great food and a good wine cellar to select from. Choose the cut of steak you like and they will cook it to you taste on the open BBQ in the back kitchen. There are sides of salads, potatoes or rice. I always enjoy the Lomo Vetado with a Ensalada Chilena (tomato with onion - a typical Chilean salad) and a red wine.more
Boule Bar is the only place I have been to in the evening that was more a bar than a restaurant. They have pizzas and ¨tablas¨that can be shared while you are drinking. Lots of cocktails to try. Don´t forget to try the typical Chilean drink - Pisco Sour.
Dress Code: Anything goes from what I can tell.

LAN flies to Osorno twice a day via Valdivia from Santiago de Chile. From time to time LAN changes their flight times and routes so for up to the minute information on flight times look at their website. The flight takes about 2 1/2 hours to get to Osorno from Santiago because of the stopover in Valdivia. Sometimes the return flight goes from...more
We rented a car in Osorno from JB Rent a Car, for a reasonable price of 23,500 pesos per day. Many of the places we wanted to see around Osorno, such as Parque Puyuhue, had erratic public transport, so we decided hiring a car was the best plan. We were a given a Corsa, from the cheapest category, and we had no problems. I'd hire a car from these...more
In Chile the standard tip in a restaurant is 10% which is sometimes added onto the bill but more often than not you need to leave behind on the table. If paying by credit card you can ask to add the tip to the bill and indicate the standard 10%.
Do not tip taxis.
If you drive a car in Chile, then there are places where you can park for free but there may be a man or woman "helping" you to park (such as near the plaza de armas in Osorno). This person works for tips. They can wash your car while you are away usually also. The tip you pay them should be anything from 200 pesos or more depending on the length of time you stay. I usually pay around 500 pesos.
In supermarkets the people who pack your bags only work for tips. They are not paid by the supermarket. Depending on the amount of groceries you could tip anything from 50 cents up to around 500 pesos. The 10% rule is not hard and fast here, just whatever loose change you have.
Osorno in winter mornings is often shrouded in fog. This fog often has the affect of plane delays both in and out of Osorno and also makes visibility difficult on the highways.
To avoid the problem when flying you could book a ticket to Puerto Montt which is an hour south of Osorno. When I have an important meeting to attend in winter I often do this just in case.
When driving in fog please take the appropriate precautions as the roads can be more dangerous.
Luggage and bags:
A backpack or suitcase with wheels
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Make sure you bring clothing that is warm and a rain jacket that will keep you dry. The weather in Osorno can be quite wet and so you will need this. I visit dairy farms when I am in Osorno so I bought gumboots when I was there at the Cooprinsem store.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: I have been able to purchase everything I need in Osorno. Currently the hotels don´t supply much in the way of hotel toiletries so better to bring your shampoo etc with you.
