Who told you that size doesn't matter ??

When taking a cruise to Puerto Montt it really makes sense to take a closer look at the size of your cruise-ship: giant ships like the Celebrity Infinity with 90.000 GRT are not able to dock in Puerto Montt and the tender-service will take away about a total of 2 hours of the precious time you could spend ashore.
This giant ship with around 2000 passengers and 980 crew onboard had only 4 tenderboats to take us ashore and of course the people who had booked one of the tours did go first and the others had to wait. Everybody had to get tickets for the tenderboats and had to show their tour-tickets, so there was no way to take an early tender.
In the evening the same thing : Sailingtime was scheduled for 05.00pm and we had been told very often, not to come in the very last minute...
In fact I was at the pier at 04.00pm and had to wait 90 minutes, queuing up for the tenders simply because all of the daytours arrived there at the same time and there seemed to be no hurry at all for the tenderservice-staff.
The main problem was the security-check onboard, putting my boarding-pass into a machine, where the officer could see my picture on a screen, so there was no way to get onboard for anybody who might have found or stolen such a boarding-pass. In addidion all of the luggage and jackets etc. was x-rayed like at the airport .

Chile is enough safe in comparison with some other countries. In general the delinquency has been increased. You never show money. You never leave your things outside your eyes. Pockets closed in knapsacks. At night it exists nighttime activities in restaurants and pubs. It drinks with moderation and he is better not to walk single.

  • Dog Lovers Beware

Like many cities in South America Puerto Montt has a terrible dog problem. There are no dog shelters. Dogs run in packs all over the city. They seem friendly and non-threatening. However, my dog lover heart was beating overtime watching them dart in and out of hectic traffic. Overall they seem healthy, a little thin maybe, but I think the fisherman provide food as well as other food outlets.
