    EXPLOSIONS OF LAVA !

Hot molten lava reaches a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius (1832F) and is fatal if touched. I don’t want to scare you, but Puerto Varas has 2 volcanoes – and 1 is active! Osorno and Calbuco dominate the skyline. Calbuco (the one with its top blown off and still smoking) is the more likely to ruin your holiday fun. It had gigantic eruptions in 1893-1894 and last erupted in 1972. Osorno, its quieter neighbour, last blew up in 1869. So if it starts smoking a lot, or the ground begins to shake – run!
