  • Stroll among the long-lived Alerce Trees

    Puerto Montt Things to Do

Nearby to Puerto Montt is Lahuen Nadi Park, home of the Alerce tree, the second longest living plant on earth. The Alerce is an indigenous conifer that can live several thousand years and thrives in moist climates. An understatement is this moist-love. When we visited the park as part of an excursion from our cruise ship, we viewed a 4,000 year-old...

  • Down the river

    Valdivia Things to Do

Valdivia's heart is by the riverside and waterfront. From the waterfront you can able to join a ferry tour down the river either to the coastal forts on the Pacific coast.; up to the wetlands; or around Isla Tegra (where I went around in November 2008). On the ferry tour I went on I passed the remaining towers that were built in the late 18th...

    Isla Chiloé Things to Do

The culture of Chiloe is unique because it was rather isolated from Spanish colonial history and its dependence on the sea for survival.Nearly all the houses on the island are made from wood. The famous thing about Chiloe are the many wooden churches. The walls of the houses have what I called 'fish-scales' designs as pieces of wood were laid side...

    Isla Chiloé Transportation

There are no flights and no roads to Chiloe from the mainland, meaning the only means of reaching the island is by boat. The easiest crossing is south of Puerto Montt, where regular ferries make the 30 minute crossing. If you travel by bus, the cost of the ferry will usually be included in your ticket. The ferry lands in the north of the island,...

A general warning about traveling to and from Petrohue on holidays: the bus schedules can be VERY infrequent.
