    Lago Chungara

This is the "final destination" of most day trips from Arica and definitely the absolute highlight. Being on 4.600m the few steps from the bus to the shore may take some time, just everything leaves you breathless up here.... You will see vicunas, flamingos and many other birds. You will hear nothing. Enjoy the silence and try to believe the view is real. Perfect!

    Parinacota

I guess this is an obligatory stop on the day tour - and it definitely is a nice one! Parinacota is a quiet indigena village with whiter than white houses and a great church made from rocks. You must go inside and see it, impressive. I saw one woman selling souvenirs, other than that there is no signs of too much tourism. You can even sleep up here - I met 2 girls trekking up there who spent the night. But careful - they told me before the could take the trip they suffered 2 days from height sickness...

    The height

The bus ride from 0 to 4600m and back in just one day will probably make you quite dizzy if you are a flat country rat like me. Ask if the driver or tourguide has some coca leaves and cactus ash. At least I believe it really helped me. Or just the power of imagination??? Also we had some mate tea on the way. It would be ashame to fall asleep during the ride....

    Visit the cemetery near Putre

On the way up Lauca just before (or after?) Putre you pass a cemetery in quite a spectacular setting. Being buried here must be quite quiet. You have only the wind to talk to. But the view....

    Thin air tree methusalems

by joernme Written Feb 4, 2004

Favorite thing: Check out the last trees on the way up. These are real methusalems, hundreds of years old and quite unique and beautiful in my opinion. They are usually standing alone and as I can't stand someone standing alone all day in such a lonely part of the world I just had to go and say Hi to it. But tree huggers careful - this one has sharp needles!

I forgot the name of it. Anyone knowing it by chance?

This guy has been standing here for over 300 years
