    national monument from nitrate glory days,built in 1887...in this time,several thousands of inhabitants!
    today,less than 100 inhabitants,most of them fishers...

    victims of pinochet's dictatorship.
    pisagua was also (for its solitude and its remoteness)a concentration camp (1973-1989)
    on a stone,words of pablo neruda:
    "even though a thousand years shall pass,this site will never be cleansed of the blood of those who fell there"

    Favorite thing: visiting a well preserved theatre (see big building on the pic),a train station....as if the inhabitants deserted it not long ago...

    you'll find the theatre key in catarina saldaña's house,near carabineros station.
    the theatre,a wooden building,was erected in 1892;on its facade:a balcony with balustrade and pillars.

    Fondest memory: after 130km through the desert,discovering a city where silence is only disturbed by the noise of the waves...
