  • Rough seas

    Zapallar Warnings and Dangers

The area that I satyed in in Zapallar was called "Mar Brava" (fierce seas) and I am sure it was named that for a reason! The ocean surrounding Zapallar is very rough and there are strong currents. The beach area is safe as it is located in a protected bay but don't do anything silly like try to swim around the rocks because it really is dangerous.

    Zapallar Things to Do

Isla Seca (or dry island in English) is like a little peninsula that juts out at the end of the beach inlet at Zapallar. It looks like an island from afar because of the rocks on it that elevate the area that sits out in the ocean however it is connected to the mainland and easy to access. We walked around to here from the far side of the beach and...

    Reñaca Local Customs

In Chile the standard tip in a restaurant is 10% which is sometimes added onto the bill but more often than not you need to leave behind on the table. If paying by credit card you can ask to add the tip to the bill and indicate the standard 10%. Do not tip taxis. If you drive a car in Chile, in particular Santiago then there are places where you can...

    Algarrobo Restaurants

Los Patitos was recommended as a nice place to have lunch. There were a number of people dining here, so it seemed a popular restaurant. It offered a nice variety of meals and was a typical Chilean restaurant nicely furnished. We began our meal with a bread basket containing round breads (Ayuya) and small oval shaped rolls (Marriquetas) which were...

    Isla Negra Things to Do

Isla Negra is tiny, all there really is to do is sit on the beach and/or visit the casa museo of Pablo Neruda, the Nobel prizewinning poet. The house is intriguing in so many ways, and the beach is a mixture of sand and rock. There is very little to the town, although I believe there is the usual low-level accommodation.

  • Getting There

    Isla Róbinson Crusoe Transportation

Some guide books tell you that the only way to get to the Islands is to fly but that isn’t strictly true, there is a small supply vessel sailing out of Valparaíso which accepts passengers and will get you there in around three days depending on the weather. However, the boat is far from practical and is really for those who want the experience of...

OK. Here's one thing we did and it was the most useful tip someone ever gave me.Since these islands are far away, food and liquors are quite expensive.
