The area that I satyed in in Zapallar was called "Mar Brava" (fierce seas) and I am sure it was named that for a reason! The ocean surrounding Zapallar is very rough and there are strong currents. The beach area is safe as it is located in a protected bay but don't do anything silly like try to swim around the rocks because it really is dangerous.
