This is the most exciting thing to do in Pucon. There are lots of tour companies around Ave. O'Higgins that will rent all of the necessary equipment to you, and take you up to the volcano with a tour guide. I went to the Sol y Nieve Expediciones shop for the tour. I believe it was December at the time and all tours were in danger of cancellation because of strong winds from the south. Luckily enough, we were able to make the climb which is much more tedious and physical than I expected. Maybe it was the thin air or the coldness, but I was struggling a bit. The views afforded from the resting points are magnificent. All of the neighboring mountain ranges are visible and Lake Villarrica stretches out below you.
I almost forgot, maybe the best part about the climb is sliding down the volcano on your back. Make sure you have thick clothes on underneath the snow gear or you may get burned. Use your pick-axe to dig into the snow to slow yourself down.

Doing ducky can be even more exciting than doing rafting. It's just you on the boat and the trip is amazing. For $17.000 pesos, Kayak Pucon (on the main street) takes you to the Licuria river, teaches you how to move, and after 45 minutes of a still river, you arrive at the white water where there's lots of excitement. Better than rafting, and much more interesting. Take a look at the travelogue for more pictures.

OK. So you see it wherever you stand. It's huge and it's there, with its smoke coming over the top. You can go go up the mountain, and see the melting magma from the top. Watch the volcano during the night, and you'll be able to see the red magma on top. There are lots of tourism agencies in downtown Pucon that offer this trip. It's worth it!
One thing: you'll be able to climb it only when there are no clouds on top. Otherwise, it's a little bit dangerous.

One thing that you can't miss when you arrive to Pucon are the wooden flower shops with their shiny colors. Wooden flowers are one very good gift for yourself if you want to remeber Pucon. There all types of flowers, with all kinds of colors. They're around $500 and $1000 pesos, depending on the size of the flowers. Nice gift. Definately.

The horseback riding trip is a blast because you're usually with a group of people who have never been riding before. The guides help to keep your horse in line when it ignores you or acts up by whistling and making loud sounds. They help to get you up the mountainside to a hidden waterfall. The whole thing was cool and different, definitely worth a try. Now, I've only been horseback riding twice before and very briefly. The tour up the mountainside is a lot of fun, but inexperienced riders should either make the horse walk very slow or run very fast. After several hours at a trot my body was aching since I don't know how to ride.

    Pucon's beach
    by IIGUANA
There are lots of beaches around the lake Villarrica, but the most crowded, the coolest, the one where everything happens and where you'll be given free passes for clubbing, is definately the Hotel Pucon's beach. It's not really the hotel's beach, but since it's next to it, everybody knows it by this name.
One thing in particular. The sand in this beach is black. Not dark brown, but black. It's the volcano's dry lava from centuries ago. So do take shoes or sandals, 'cause it does get really hot during the summer.

It's not a big casino, but it moves quite a lot of money. The first floor is for free: slot machines and computer based games. If you want to play roulette or cards, then the second floor is for you! It's CLP 3000. Not expensive.
    Dress casual.

    Beware of the hot lava!!!
The Villarrica volcano is still active, and you can see its melting magma if you climb it. Sometimes it erupts. If I'm not wrong, it's been over 20 years since it hasn't. But it will, so be sure to be there to see it!!!

Most Volcanic Thermal Springs are nowadays part of hotel premises...However you can find it convenient to stay in the not-so-cheap hotels, and have it as a base for more activities. There is no doubt the locations are excellent ! Some of the names are Huife, Menetue, Palquin, Panqui, San Luis. Others are in wonderful natural locations such as Termas Geometricas at the foot of a gorge. Los Pozones is a cheap one at 3,500 $ch. offering just the basics and often visited in the night !!
Anyway if you just wish to offer your tired body time for relaxation , book a visit with a travel agency. You will be picked up at your hotel, transferred to the hot springs, have one hour of bathing, have a free Pisco Sour and go to sleep for hours...
The entrance for bathing in the jacuzzi style inside pools or two outside pools is from 6.00ch.p. to 8,500 ch.p. (13-17$US) depending on the hotel. And the hotel prices is 60$US - 120$US a room in high season. In off season periods there are many offers. Massage and a lot of body and face treatment services are available.
What ever decision you come up with, I am absolutely sure you will be happier when you are leaving..!!!

Park Huerquehue is a piece of paradise! A piece of beautiful native forest with abrupt hills, shimmering lakes and lagoons, streams and gorges, and a lot of springs. Near the entrance there is a camping site in a beautiful location on the lake side. The path is well maintained but quite strenuous as it goes higher. Nevertheless I have seen even children going up. Wonderful views are offered in reward all along the way!! It normally takes about 5-6 hours. If you get there by the 8.00 bus you will take 3 hours to get to Lagoon Verde, two hours to rest, enjoy the view or take a bath in the crystal clear lake water and about 2 hours to walk down in time for the afternoon bus to Pucon. There is an administration office several meters from the entrance where you can get any information. If you are not certain about the correct way ask the few locals living in the park. There are other paths which branch off the central path leading to cascades and lagoons.
Use a walking stick . It's much easier and there are several already made left on the ground by the entrance.

  • Directions: There are a lot of tall Araucaria trees so here is a...useless tip. The Araucaria of that region grows 1 meter every 15 years!!!
