Chillán Things to Do

  • Sighting the Elusive Condor

I have been told condors have been seen over the mountains of Termas de Chillan and near Lake Colbun,Chile, but are primarily found in Peru, N. Venezuela, N. Colombia and Patagonia. The Andean condors can live as long as 50-60 years and can fly up to 18,000 feet. They are on the average 4 feet tall, weigh 10-20 pounds and have a wing spread of 10...

  • A Spa To Remember...

The spa at the Gran Hotel was a thing of wonder! Many services were offered and the treatment was first class! Over the four days we lodged at the hotel, I scheduled a French manicure; a 60 minute facial and a 80 minute massage with reflexology. Never have I felt so pampered with such great result. I walked on clouds after my massage! I would say...

  • The Thermal Waters

Aquaerobics were given each afternoon in the thermal waters. The depth was up to my neck, so exercising in the water made it challenging for me to stay on my feet. However, it was an invigorating activity! The waters varied each day in temperature, but at one point the reading was 108 degrees. The thermal pool was indoors, but a small channel...

  • The skies the limit--an astronomy lesson

One evening a group of us walked a short distance with guides to the golf course, where a telescope was set up to view the heavens. The sky was clear, so that a myriad number of stars could be seen strewn across the universe. I can?t remember a time when so many stars were visible. We took turns viewing the sky through the telescope, which our guide...

  • An Oxigenation Walk Through Nature

Each day an oxigenation walk was given by guides who would discuss various plants, flowers, trees and creatures of nature as we followed the trails near our hotel. Although our family would walk the trails each day after breakfast, the guided walk took us further to the rescue dog kennels.Alaskan Malamutes are used in competition and in rescue...

  • Why not Flamenco?

I was amused to find Flamenco lessons available at the hotel, so I had to look into them. There were only six of us wanting to get a sample of this dance. Our instructor oozed sensuality at she guided us expertly through a pattern of steps to lively music. It was a great deal of fun and I only hope I remember some of the steps to show my...

  • Yoga Classes--a peaceful respite

Each morning at 9:15 am Yoga classes were given at the hotel. Our instructor was Maria, who had studied yoga for ten years. We began with stretching, then were shown various positions in Yoga. We each had mats on which to sit or lie upon. The exercises were wonderfully relaxing and prepared us to meet the day head on! My favorite part of the class...

  • A bus ride to Valle Hermoso

Those who desired to go to Valle Hermoso gathered at the reception desk, then boarded a bus provided by the hotel. We drove a short distance (10 minutes) to a public thermal springs where our guide told us a little about the plants and trees in the area.Araucario Araucana, a tree which grows only one centimeter a year, is a protected species...

  • A Walk to Gruta Los Pangues

Our hotel provided a sheet of activities available for each day. On our third day, a walk to Gruta los Pangues was scheduled, which began at our hotel and continued down the hill for about 1 1/2 miles. It was a dusty walk, as passing vehicles churned up clouds of dust that settled on us. A St. Bernard dog escorted us down the hill and up the...

Chillán Restaurants

  • Experience down home Chilean cooking

"Luis" serves juicy steaks with tasty Chilean side-dishes: insalata chilena, salsa piquante, etc. The service is very friendly and the ambiente typical for a neighborhood restaurant (it is withing easy walking distance from the Gran Hotel Isabel Riquelme downtown). The wine list is limited, but presentable.

  • Fuente Alemana

Fuente Alemana is a good value restaurant/cafe in the centre of town. We ate breakfast here one morning, and lunch on a different day, and on both days the food was fine, the service fast & efficient, and the prices were good. They offer many good value lunch deals such as the meals we had: Chinese chicken with rice for 2500 pesos, and milanesa...

  • Delicious Dining at Termas de Chillan...

Bountiful buffets were part of our hotel package at Termas de Chillan. Each meal was preceded by a buffet of some type for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our table was the same one each day with the same waiter, as well. Beverages were extra and not included with the price. The procedure was to begin at the buffet located outside the door of the...

    Larrañaga Car Hire

    by barryg23 Updated Feb 4, 2008

Larrañaga is a good car hire company in Chillan. We rented a nice Chevrolet Aveo for 4 days from them, at a cost of 25000 per day with unlimited kilometres. They were a friendly and efficient company and we had no problems at all with the car.

Gran Hotel Gift Shop: Resort Souvenirs

by VeronicaG Updated Mar 4, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The gift shop was directly off the lobby at the Gran Hotel. Since high season at the resort is in the winter for skiing many items were discounted when we visited. They had postcards, men, women and children's attire, jewelry, leather products, glassware, etc.

Although many shopkeepers speak English, it wasn't the case here. I did the best with my Spanish, but didn't do well enough to put my questions across so my daughter-in-law came to my rescue! It was very convenient to have a gift shop here since town was at least 1 l/2 hrs. away.

What to buy: Souvenirs, clothing not in season--they're discounted!

What to pay: A bit above average if in season

Chillán Favorites

  • Dressing for Meals

We stayed at the Gran Hotel during family week, which was Chilean summer in February. No one dressed too formally for any of the meals, but men were to wear trousers with shirts or sports shirts for dinner. We wore shorts to breakfast or lunch because we usually had activities scheduled throughout the morning and afternoon. My daughter-in-law and I...

  • The Grill and Carbon

If you take good advice and rent a cabin while staying in Chillan, it will more than likely have a bbq pit to cook on. Everything that you need to prepare a meal for a dozen costs about $3 per person. I suppose I was made the grill master because (I'm from New Orleans)? Anyway, I had at least 20 pounds of meat and vegetables firing away on that...
