Near Llico is a lake called Lago Vichuquen which is really pretty. The lake has a population of black necked swans which people like to stop and look at. The lakeside is a holiday destination that is popular but not overrun with people.

The beach at Llico is really dangerous and definitely not ok to swim in. You can, however, take a walk along it. Some people also surf cast from the shore to try and catch fish. There is a lagoon nearby also which I didn't see anyone using at the time we were there but there was birdlife that you could look at. I found the place very relaxing and peaceful.

The main reason we came to Llico was because of the Dieciocho festival. The idea was that we would come to a place that was smaller and experience the festival in a more traditional way. The reality was that everyone stared at us and we felt kind of uncomfortable. My friend who was supposed to come with us couldn't come at the last minute so we really had no bridge between us and the locals.

Nevertheless, we went to watch the "cueca" dances and watch the locals (and be watched) for an hour or so and then walked back to our hotel without drinking a thing. Kind of funny really because the Chileans were all drinking large bottles of Pisco and coke (Piscola) and getting drunker by the minute!

We decided to eat all our meals at the restaurant inside the hotel we stayed at. The restaurant overlooked the sea.

Favorite Dish: For breakfast we were given bread, cheese and ham accompanied with coffee or tea with hot milk. We ate fish and steak dishes also. The "pebre" was really good. Pebre is a Chilean entree that is usually served with bread and butter before the meal when your drinks are served. The pebre is made with tomatoes, onions, green chilli and oil.

A rental car is a really great way to get around especially outside of Santiago. My friends and I rented a car and off we went. The roads aren't really well sign posted unfortunately but it is pretty hard to get lost!

There are buses that go to Lago Vichuquen but I think they probably take a long time and are not all that frequent. Renting a car gave us the flexibility to stay as short or long as we liked.

One word of warning... the road is not paved out this way and was actually pretty damn scary to drive on!

It cost us about 215,000 pesos for 4 days.
