El Corral: Casual Dining with Stunning Views

by VeronicaG

On a recent trip to Chile to visit our son's family, we stopped by El Corral for a quick bite and our introduction to Chicureo's newest mini-mall.Located in the Mall Laguna de Piedra Roja near their home, this site had all the makings of a 5 star view of the glistening lake and the majestic foothills of the Andes.Daniel, our grandson, was eager for us to try out his favorite place for hamburgers. I would compare this to an upscale Wendy's back home in the states--the burgers and fries were delicious! Of course, as mentioned, enjoying the view from the outdoor dining area made this more than just a burger joint.

Liguria: Extraordinary restaurant in Santiago/Providencia

by coccinella169

Liguria have 3 restaurants in Santiago - I went only to the one in Avenida Providencia. It was an all strange but great experience. The restaurant is quite large but nevertheless almost every table was occupied - it was so crowded! Every centimetre of the walls is decorated with old fotos, paintings and old album covers (like the ones of Julio Iglesias in the 1970ies :)). They play super loud 1950ies and 1960ies music. The smoking and non-smokers area is seperated. The food was surprisingly good. I had the Sopa de almejas, which was excellent, although there were only 4 almejas in it :). I also tried the Crème Brulée which was equally very good. It is not really the place for a romantic dinner because of the crowds and the noise level though.

Cooking your own meals..or ..Cazuelas?

by elsadran

Restaurants in Chile are plentiful with culinary options to satisfy the most demanding customer. There are usually long buffets with all kind of tasty multicoloured dishes. Soup and vegetables are in sufficient amounts as Chile has fruit and veg producing zones in the central regions. Meat is always present and abounding. It's the whole of Southamericans that adore eating meat. I am sure they are sure nobody can survive without it...I am basically a vegetarian but I can appreciate a couple of lamb ribs juicily melting in my mouth..! But this latin American habit of cooking everything with meat...!!! I remember being invited to dinner in South Argentina for 3 successive days with the menu being nothing more than meat. For main dish, accompanying dish, and for the finale?..meat again! In my weak protest of there being no salad they pointed at the potatoes laying in the beef dish. I tried...

Aqua terra: Vegetarian entree

by kyoub

When we checked into the Aqua Terra Hotel we were given coupons for a free pisco sour.We decided that we would wait and get it at dinner time and stay there to eat.To my amazement, when I looked at the menu, I saw several vegetarian dishes. The restaurant was very cozy, the food was good and arrived quickly. The waitress was quite friendly and she spoke english, that was a big plus. They have several vegetarian dishes on their menu. Those are very hard to find in Southern Chile. They brought us a picante appetizer that they said was quite hot. It seemed pretty mild to us but very good.We had a good meal and great Pisco Sours.

Hotel Tierre de Fuego: Good Pizza

by kyoub

A light breakfast was included with our room here.It was the usual juice, cold cereal, yogurt, toast, and Jam.Hot water for tea or Sanka. There was also a table with some sweets. The night we got there we were just to tired to go out for dinner so we decided to get something from the room service menu. Most everything had meat and I don't eat meat so there was a problem. We finally decided on pizza, but what do we have on it?There were several choices but we couldn't decide. Finally we ordered a pizza with cheese, corn, and asparagus.Don't laugh, it was delicious.I wish that I had taken a picture.

Restaurant Panoramico: Buffet

by kyoub

The views from the top floor, Restaurant Panoramico/lounge in the Finis Terrae Hotel are great. They have buffet dinners on Friday and Sat evening. Somewhat overpriced but service and setting was good. They are quite busy so if you want to eat there be sure to reserve a table ahead of time.We made our reservation earlier that day and at first they told us there was nothing available. I was somewhat disappointed because everything seemed to have meat in it and I do not eat meat. Chileans do not understand not eating meat. The fish was good though.

Asturias: Seafood dishes

by kyoub

Las Asturias is a traditional Basque restaurant. Good location, large portions, spanish decor. Our guide book recommended it and said that it was popular with the locals so we decided to try it.The locals started arriving about the time we finished with our meal. Best to go before 9pm.It was a great experience with super food , good atmosphere, and fast service. Nice wine menu.Mon-Sat noon to 2:30pm, 8pm-11:30pm We had the eel with garlic sauce and fresh salmon. Both were very good.

Santiago modern

by yelcho

Santiago has a great selection of contemporary dining choices, all pretty much affordable to North Americans and Europeans. Many of the old buidings and warehouses are being converted into fine restaurants. Try them all! The fish in Chile is excellent. The meat is pretty good but nothing like Argentina

MARISCAL

by swesn

Known in Peru and Ecuador as 'cerviche', here, the Chileans call it 'mariscal' where raw slimey seafood are served in lime juice. For take-aways, some fish markets sell them in handy cups. In 'marisquerias' (seafood restaurants), they are served in a big bowl.I had no idea which planets they came from, much less what they were. Just all orange, pink, purple, translucent, yellowish… I scooped all the slimey and slippery bastards down my throat. Hmmm… delicious. Although I admit that after about 3/4 of the bowl, I felt a little woozie and the remaining seafood looked a tad disgusting to me. But I was determined to finish up everything. Ha!

MAMUT: Great for casual dining

by VeronicaG

Casual dining for an inexpensive price can be found at MAMUT. This restaurant offered inside dining and bar area, plus outdoor dining under umbrella tables. We chose the latter location to have our meal since it was a mild, sunny day.I ordered my favorite lunch, a chicken quesadilla ($2.790 pesos) which was great; other choices were a beef/chicken mix ( $2.890 pesos) or beef only ($2.900 pesos). **2.500 pesos were approximately the equiv. to $5.00 U.S.MAMUT received an award for the attractive design of this restaurant. I really liked the quesadillas!
