Medialunas--Dulce Luna: Delectable Pastry

by VeronicaG

When we traveled to Buenos Aires last year, we discovered a wonderfully sweet pastry called a medialuna. Happily, a bakery in Santiago specializes in these tasty confections, too!We stopped for an assortment to take home to have for breakfast the next morning before departing on our trip to Algarobbo,Chile. Of course, we had to try one after dinner that evening. I didn't realize the medialunas came filled with chocolate, strawberry jam and other lovely options. My favorite medialuna is glazed with sugar--my mouth waters just thinking about it. Try them, you'll like them! Any choice of medialuna would be a good one!

BENIHANA OF TOKYO: Japanese Style Cooking!

by VeronicaG

Benihana's offered great Japanese style cooking conveniently located outside the doors of the Parque Arauco Mall. It seems that on this visit to Chile, most of our dining was done in this area. We enjoyed our meal outdoors on the wide terrace along which many restaurants sat.An appetizer began our meal, shrimp tempura ($5.400) which was delicious. I ordered Tonkatsu Chicken over rice ($3.500 pesos) which included bits of egg and onions. This dish was so flavorful! A glass of Misiones de Rengo Chardonnay accompanied my meal. This winery has received many awards for its wines and I'm planning to take a few bottles home with me.**$2.500 pesos was the equiv. to $5.00 U.S. Tonkatsu Chicken was reasonably priced, but the Shrimp Tempura caused me to rank this restaurant more expensive than average. If you forego the appetizer, it's moderately priced.

PASTA Y BASTA: Luscious Italian Food in Chile

by VeronicaG

My son took us all out to dinner for Valentine's Day at Pasta y Basta--an Italian restaurant outside the Parque Arauco mall. The outdoor dining area was full, so we were led to an inside table. My meal began with a glass of Montes Reserva Sauvignon Blanc( $2.500 pesos a glass). A wonderful bread assortment was brought to us in a basket--I love the breads of Chile! I selected Sorrentino, which was ravioli stuffed with mozzarella, potatoes and small bits of ham with a cream sauce. This dish could be ordered singly ($5.100 pesos) or for two ($11,400). If we return someday, I hope to order the same dish--it was wonderful! **2.500 pesos were approximately $5.00 U.S.The portions were very large, so all of us took what remained of our meals home. My son suggested one of their desserts, which from prior experience he proclaimed absolutely great. I tried a piece of strawberry pie--he was right,...

MOSTO: Wine Bar In The City

by VeronicaG

Mosto is located outside of the Parque Arauco Mall along with many other restaurants and eateries. It has an extensive wine list, sleek bar and outside dining area. We sat on the outside terrace under a wide umbrella upon a comfortable couch.I invited my daughter-in-law here after an evening of shopping at the mall. I ordered a glass of Montes Reserva Sauvignon Blanc for myself and an assorted cheese tray and shrimp to share, she sipped a coke. The entire bill came to $9.300 pesos or less than $20 US for both of us.The cheese tray had several assorted cheeses with nuts, raisins and grapes scattered on top. The shrimp was lightly touched with garlic butter...ummm! Marvelloso! I recommend a stop here to anyone traveling in this area. The assorted cheese tray and tasty shrimp in garlic butter

Zanzibar: Romantic Moroccan-Inspired Restaurant

by VeronicaG

Dining at Zanzibar is romantic and exotic! The Moroccan inspired atmosphere made it a hit with us. Upstairs there was a very popular terrace area, but since we were traveling with three children we thought it best to settle in the downstairs dining room. We eased ourselves into the comfortable cushions lining the seating area and just relaxed. Music pulsed throughout the restaurant helping to create an entertaining evening for us. UPDATE: We paid a return visit to Zanibar (Feb.06) Calories aside, we began our meal with an appetizer called Trilogy--it included mini empanadas, chicken pieces and mini balls of meat. We also sampled humus accompanied by small rounds of bread. I ordered Chicken and Rice Curry with Vegetables($7.400 pesos) that was tender and flavorful. I also had one of the best Strawberry Coladas I've ever tasted! ($3.800 pesos). **5.000 pesos are the equiv. of $10 US.As we...

Geraldine's: Delightful Tea at Geraldine's

by VeronicaG

After a hectic day in Santiago, I went with my daughter-in-law and the children to Geraldine's for tea. We ordered a basket of sweet breads and extra pastry so that we could all do a little sampling. Geraldine's was a serene oasis after being jostled by pedestrians in Santiago. We relaxed over our tea enjoying every sip. I would like to return on my next visit.Geraldine's also has a gourmet grocery store next to the restaurant. The sweet bread basket and pastry--so good!

The Havana Cafe: Santiago's Havana Cafe

by VeronicaG

The Havana Cafe was near the Pre Colombian museum in Santiago. When at this museum, we asked a staff member to recommend a restaurant for lunch. We were directed to the Havana Cafe where we ordered a chicken salad sandwich and Three milk cake for dessert. The meal was good and we got to spend time people watching here. The chicken salad sandwich was terrific!

AGUA: Gourmet in the city-Agua

by VeronicaG

This restaurant is upscale, pricey and popular; the decor chic and sophisticated. A glass wall overlooking the street filled with hungry patrons is the first thing we noticed. This area was lively and full of conversation. We were led to a quieter part of the restaurant to our table. FYI, I was told that Agua is one of the top ten restaurants in the Southern hemisphere.Since this was our last night in Santiago, we wanted to take our son and daughter-in-law to some place special. Judging from how crowded Agua was, those present must have agreed. Our reservations were for 8:30 p.m.-- we did not leave until 11:00 p.m. Tasty shrimp-filled empanadas began my meal. Dinner was pasta shaped envelopes filled with a crab mixture...truly heavenly! Each of us ordered a different entree that was absolutely wonderful.

Como Agua Para Chocolate--Like water for chocolate: Santiago's colorful restaurant

by VeronicaG

Como Agua para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) was in the Bellevista area and near Las Chascona. The restaurant had colorful stuccoed walls in bright orange, blue and pink. The roof was a glass, wrought iron enclosure with water running from it. A fountain sat in the center of the restaurant and a stairway with ornamental ironwork led to a balcony area. Ivy climbed the walls to the balcony making this restaurant picturesque and charming. We ordered shrimp, chicken and steak fajitas. They were delicious and filling. We also enjoyed a bottle of Miguel Torres Sauvignon Blanc. (** Miguel Torres is our favorite winery and we've visited twice--each time loading up on various wines. It's located near Talca,Chile)

El Tablon: If you have a craving for beans...

by ctorres1979

This little roadside restaurant was about halfway on the drive between Santiago and Chillan. Like most Chilean restaurants the food tastes like you went to a family members house and they were preparing your meal all day. They have an awesome bean soup. They serve a huge steaming bowl to you with fresh tender beans, squash, corn and some sort of really tasty oil on top. And they give you some fresh bread to go with it.
