Bellevista Street Scene by VeronicaG When acquainting yourself with Santiago, you must venture to Bellevista! Barrio Bellevista is located at the base of Cerro San Cristobal in Santiago. The neighborhood has popular restaurants, discos and shops and is considered a bohemian type of neighborhood. It is said that the evening comes alive here! Our wanderings in this district were always in the daytime because it's a pleasant place to walk with its shady streets and picturesque buildings. Last year we enjoyed lunch at Como Agua Para Chocolate--a restaurant with a Mexican feel, which we highly recommend. (See my restaurant tips). Come to Bellevista to absorb the colorful atmosphere and enjoy all that it has to offer! Address: Bellevista Neighborhood

The Streets of Lastarria by VeronicaG This area of Santiago brings to mind romance and Old World charm. Following our visit to the Cultural Center, our son suggested we stroll through the neighborhood of Lastarria. Our intention was to have lunch, but most of the restaurants were closed since we arrived after 3 pm. However, The Pergola de la Plaza was open, for which we were grateful! (Please see my restaurant tips) The sidewalk disappeared around an vine-covered corner, past some fragrant bouganvillea and colonial looking buildings. This area was a pedestrian mall, bricked in interesting patterns with aged planters overflowing with greenery or flowers. The barrio of Lastarria is near the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a fine arts museum on Parque Forestal. Address: Plaza de Mulato Gil, LastarriaDirections: Santiago--near Parque Forestal

Third Level Entrance To The Cultural Center by VeronicaG One Sunday afternoon we traveled to the Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, Santiago's new Cultural Center. It was free this day! We parked near the Bellas Artes Museum and took the metro to the stop at La Moneda. The Cultural Center was constructed beneath what used to be a parking lot, which fronted the Presidential Palace. Skylights in the center are integrated and barely visible in the sidewalk which runs by the palace. An exhibition of Pre-Colombian Art from Mexico was featured. There were many statues of all sizes, ritual pieces, jewelry and architectural fragments. An immense phallic symbol greeted you upon entering the exhibit hall. The descriptions of the artifacts were in Spanish only. It was an amazing display of ancient artifacts! This particular exhibition continues through July '06. Hours are Tuesday-Sunday 10 am-9:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. Admission fees are $ 600 pesos for adults; $ 300 pesos for students; Children under 5 free. **1.250 pesos are the equiv. of $2.50 US Address: Plaza de la CiudadaniaPhone: (56/2) 696 9734

Plaza Peru on Isidora Goyenechea Avenue by VeronicaG, 2 more photos After spending the morning antiquing, my husband and I met our daughter-in-law for lunch in an area of Santiago amusingly referred to as "Sanhattan" because it reminds some travelers of New York City and is Chile's business district. Avenue Isidora Goyenechea runs through this district which contains many familiar sounding restaurants such as Ruby Tuesday, Hooters and Bennigan's. A nice selection of local restaurants with indoor/outdoor dining line the avenue, as well. A small park known as Plaza Peru gives those who work in this area a shady place in which to take a break, eat a snack or socialize. There are lovely trees and a shelter from the hot sun under which benches can be found. It's an ideal place to rest your feet after a long morning of shopping! Need I say...it's also a superb spot to people watch? Address: Along Isidora Goyenechea, Las Condes,Santiago

Grandkids looking all tuckered out from shopping! by VeronicaG On my most recent trip to Chile (Feb.06) I was introduced to Pomaire--a small town which is about 70 km from Santiago and whose main street was crowded with one shop after another selling clay products, jewelry, straw items, garden planters, wind chimes and other typical souvenirs. I have a separate page for POMAIRE, so I hope you'll want to view it. Tourists love stopping here to buy souvenirs, as I did. There are a number of restaurants to sample, also. We stopped in Pomaire on our way to Isla Negra and Algarrobo,Chile, which was not very distant from Santiago. Directions: South Central Chile

Uniformed guards stood sentry at the entryway to the Palacio de la Moneda. They were tall and imposing as the Swiss Guards at Buckingham Palace, but unlike those guardians, smiled as I snapped a photo. Although the building is not used as a palace anymore, it is a historical landmark, which meant that we had to go through security. The front entrance to the Palacio is on Plaza de la Constitucion. Architectural Details: The colored stone of the building was transported from a quarry at Cerro San Christobal. Valdivia provided oak and cypress for the construction. A newly opened Cultural Center was constructed beneath the street once used as a parking lot in front of the Presidential Palace. Its skylights are actually part of the sidewalk! Address: Barrio CivicoDirections: Santiago

While taking a leisurely walk through Lastarria's narrow streets, we came upon this church. Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, is a neighborhood church built in 1858 and a national landmark. This vividly painted structure was designed by French architect Brunet de Baines in the neoclassical style. It certainly livened up the street on which it sat! A short distance beyond the church was the pedestrian mall marked by stately colonial buildings on each side. The Museum of Art was closed for the day, but would have provided a nice diversion! See picture #2. Address: Plaza del Mulato Gil #124Directions: Lastarria, Santiago

View of Santiago from Cerro San Cristobal by VeronicaG, 2 more photos When you visit Cerro San Cristobal, an incomparable view of Santiago is guaranteed! It is a favorite subject of photographers, which is understandable. The city spreads out before you as low lying clouds shift to permit a peek at the panorama. We found the view exhilarating!! When exiting the funicular, steps lead to a small terrace where booths sell postcards and other souvenirs. The climb continues, leading those with sturdy legs to the statue of the Virgin. We made it to the top, perhaps breathing a little harder than usual. In the distance of photos 2 and 3 a cloud seems to hover over the city, but it isn't what it seems--it's a layer of dust.

Parque Nacional Torres del Paine is one of the most beautiful and wild nacional parks in southern Chile, in Provincia de Magellanes. Is located some 100 km north of Puerto Natales, lattitude more or less 51 S. To it's northern border, Argentina's Parque Nacional Los Glaciares starts (home base for famous Perito Moreno and Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre mountains). To it's northwest, the eternal Hielo del Sur (Southern Patagonian Ice Field) starts. To the east, the pampa stretches out, the famous steppe. The area of approx 242.000 ha has been established as Parque Nacional in 1959. The park offers inumerous trails for day hikes, as well as the two famous trekks - "El Circuito", the 8 day hike around the center massif Macizo Paine, and the "W", which is a more easy 5 day hike along the southern part of Macizo Paine, following the 2 valleys (Valle Ascensio and Valle Francés). If you like to know more about it, please feel free to read what I wrote about Hiking in PN Torres del Paine Leave a Comment Address: Puerto Natales

by VeronicaG Bellevista is where poet Pablo Neruda built his hillside home, La Chascona. Maybe that's why the neighborhood just an artsy feel to it! Most restaurants along the streets of Bellevista offer outdoor dining. The atmosphere is one of local color, friendly banter and leisurely meals where one can taste the flavor of Chile and people watch to one's content! If coming here in the evening, take care to protect your wallets. Crowds are sometimes fertile fields for this type of crime, although we've never had a problem in Chile, no matter where we've traveled.
