    Iglesia San Pedro
A colonial church built with indigenous or artisanal materials - adobe, wood from the cardon cactus and, in lieu of nails, large leather straps.
It dates from 17th century though it present walls were built in 1745 and the bell tower was added in 1890.

A thermal, relaxing pool in this volcanic region of Chile sounded like a splendid idea after the tough climb up the volcano.

The problem is that thermal pools are all out of the way, a huge distance from the main highways and hidden amidst the woods. One needs one's own transportation.

The only option opened to me was to take a bus to Pucon, another bus towards Curarrehue, hop off at Catripulli and walk 2 km to Termas San Luis.

I would not really recommend Termas San Luis for it was a like a luxurious resort and the pools were those proper swimming pool-sort. I would have preferred to bathe in a natural pool. But I had no choice.

Still, it is a pleasant experience submerging in the pool for a few hours.

    Caspana
A typically Andean village and archaeological monument of the upper Rio Loa. Be aware - drinking water is contaminated wit arsenic - it is better to stick to bottled water.
Caspana is nestled in its namesake valley, it´s exactly what an Andean village is supposed to look like - verdant terraces, thatched roofs, the colonial Iglesia de San Lucas and a museum.

A wonderful national park on the west side of Chiloe Island, with interesting and unique flora. One trail leads to the beach where you can view the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Another takes you through an area entirely overgrown by evergreen forests and moss-covered ground - El Tepaul.

PUNTA ARENAS : OTWAY SOUND / SENO OTWAY
Penguins at Seno Otway - Chile

About 70km north of Punta Arenas, there is a colony of Magellanic penguins at Otway Sound. From November to March, which is summer, visitors are allowed. December or January is the time the baby penguins are beginning to fledge, a wonderful sight.

There are boardwalks, fences and bird-hides to allow visitors to observe the penguins, without disturbing them. Still, one can get quite close to them.

Be forewarned that the wind is terribly terribly STRONG and FREEZING COLD. Bring a really good wind-proof jacket and wear your woollies!

The cheapest way to get there is to take a minivan (3500 Ch Pesos) from a travel agency located within the first block from the Plaza along Calle Pedro Montt. Minivans depart in the late afternoon.

Entrance to reserve is 2500 Ch Pesos.
