VALPARAISO : FORMER IMPORTANT SEA-PORT
Valparaiso was an important sea-port that has lost its glory. It used to be a developed trading base in the southern Pacific for agents from Europe and United States and a key port for shipping between northern Pacific and Cape Horn at the southern tip of Chile. However, it declined with the opening of the Panama Canal. While it is a coastal town, Chile is squeezed by the Andes mountain range that a little inwards from the coast, the land has risen to undulating hills. The lower end is the business centre and the higher ends, reached by ascensors (furnicular railways up to the hills) are mostly residential houses. Some areas are unsafe, do not go alone. The huge ancient hall of the 'mercado' (market) of Valparaiso is really interesting as well. Check out the numerous 'marisquerias' (seafood restaurants) on the second floor for great seafood... both raw and cooked!
