Getting there is pretty straight-forward -- you should fly. To and from North American, most all the flights leave at night, so you can sleep through without much jetlag.Once you're there, don't be shy about getting on the subway. It's clean and safe and takes you just about anywhere you'd need to get in the city. Personally, I like exploring the subways around the world and have been on many. This was one of the best.

I flew to Chile from Europe.

The busses around Chile are very organized and usually comfortable. So don't hesitate to get around using busses. There is another option to hitch-hike. I did that a little and it was fine and a good oppurtunity to practice my spanish, but it can also take an enormous amount of time. Some rented a car, but it's very expensive to leave it in another part of Chile (as far as I could see) so unless your trip is circular - it's usually not worth it.Busses and domestic flights are the way I chose to do it (domestic flight are very cheap! Usually it is even cheaper to ask for a two way ticket than just one - even if you won't use the second one. Besides, students get good discounts on tickets - so bring the student card with you!)

We flew from Uruguay on Lan Chilie. Be aware that U.S. citizen are charged 20 or 30 dollars in U.S. currency to enter the country. We took a bus from Pucon Airport to our hotel. Many people cycle. Some hich rides. ** Be aware if you plan to travel by car. Some towns and villages are only reachable via primitine roads and trails. Others ore only accessable by boat. Many people will pay the capitan of a cargo ship to give them a ride to these difficult to reach areas.

By plane.

By car is the best I think, but I don't know how the trains are like, but i think it's best to rent a car if you want see more than just Santiago. But If you just stay in Santiago you can get around with a very clean and modern metro.

Only IF you are a Cherié is this part of a normal day. A simple trip from Paine to Santiago consists of asking the ticket collector if I could see how a train is operated...and after that...I board the train as if I was the conductor and they let me help (the horn being my favorite task) until we reach our destination.

The easiest and most common way to move around is by bus. Hitchhiking also works rather easily between Santiago and Puerto Montt. Through the Carratera Austral, be prepared for slower travel as buses often only run once a day. Hitching here also works but be prepared for longer waits.

We took American and AeroMexico airlines. And had no problems at all. Flight was only 8 hours from Mexico City to Santiago but we got served breakfast twice, and dinner once!Metro, bus, and car which was provided by my friends family. Car rental prices were pretty high. Train rides are reasonably priced and offer great views of the country. Of course the metro in Santiago, was fun.

I flew Lacsa out of Miami. It was cheap and good value. Got to walk around in Costa Rica for 45 minutes too. Definitely want to go there now!The over night buses are great. It's like you're on a plane. Get the ones with reclining seats. A little more money, but you can really stretch out. Actually better than a plane in that respect. Even got a free meat before bed with a liter of water. And breakfast in the morning! The bingo was a bit annoying when I was trying to sleep, but you couldn't deny their eagerness to please. Like to see something like this Stateside. The boat/bus excursion from Bariloche (Argentina) to Puerto Montt is a bit pricey, but a nice day of sight seeing which is relaxing after a trek. You can also break the trip up and stay in Ensenada at the cabanas.
