Be aware by TheWanderingCamel Crime and personal security are not the major issue in Chile that they are in some South American countries, but that doesn't mean to say you should not be aware that pickpockets and purse snatchers are always on the lookout for a careless tourist. We had an encounter with a fairly inept such thief in Valparaiso - we were walking down a very empty street in El Plan, over towards the harbour, when - out of nowhere - this fellow made a grab for Mr L's back pocket. MrL is big and, being very, very well-travelled, very aware of the need for being aware of such incidents - his response was so fast our poor little thief didn't have a hope and he scuttled away with no wallet and a very large flea in his ear. We were remiss for being perhaps a little complacent - but we did learn from it and , although we didn't become too paranoid about it, we were just that little bit more careful from then on. You all know the precautions to take, I'm not going to repeat them. Just be careful, keep your eyes open and the valuables on you to an absolute minimum. Leave a Comment

Chile loves their four-legged friends, but one has to watch where you walk in order to avoid certain "evidence" of their presence. When I took my daily walk, the dogs would be out for their morning exercise, as well. Most were happy fellows, eager to greet you with a wagging tail. In my travels through Chile, I marvel at the street smarts of the dogs and cats here. I've actually seen dogs waiting at lights to use the cross walks. People are always amazed when I mention this! Whether traveling in Santiago or venturing out in the country, you'll see dogs running loose everywhere! They are conditioned to the traffic and walk along the roadways completely oblivious to the noise from wheeled vehicles. Occasionally, one will stray too far into the roadway, but this doesn't seem to happen very often.

Chile's police maintain a fairly obvious presence but have a reputation for being courteous. We certainly found them so, despite getting a pretty firm reprimand for driving too fast on a highway access ramp - and getting a parking fine in Curico! A Sunday encounter in Santiago was much more relaxed - to the point of photos being taken of MrL wearing a police hat and posing with a very big police dog! They are a paramilitary force and do have considerable authority and a role to play in the country's security. They maintain the guard at the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago - watching the Changing of the Guard Ceremony there will give you a pretty good indication of the military aspect of the force. The carabineros may ask for your identification at any time. Photocopying your passport identity page and Chilean entry stamp will mean you can carry that and leave your passport safely locked up in your hotel safe - a good idea given that street crime is a problem in some places. The emergency number for the Carabineros all over Chile is 133 Leave a Comment

As Pinochet fell down, freedom of speech took its place back in the everyday life (more or less...). But, as a metter of fact, it seems that every speech is allowed, even nasty ones... In the bookshops of Valparaiso, we have been really surprised to find books worshiping 3rd Reich or explaining the jewish threat among other books about Chilean cities... Did these books have a success thanks to the old nazis immigrants, looking for a brand new novel ? Leave a Comment

This city seems not to be poor, but there is nothing to see here and prices are very high, though the services have no specific quality ! Don't even stay one night and go directly to San Pedro de Atacama... Cette ville n'a pas l'air d'etre pauvre, mais il n'y a vraiment rien a y voir et les prix sont tres eleves, malgre une qualite de service bien basse. Ne restez meme pas une nuit et allez directement a San Pedro de Atacama... Leave a Comment

Horrible by TheWanderingCamel Chileans have a lot to learn about coffee. Order one in lots of places and the best you can hope for is a sachet of instant and a cup of hot water - the only thing that can be said in its favour is that the "coffee" in this instance is a named brand and sealed so it's likely to be fresh. In other places you'll find there's a lidded bowl of coffee already on the table for you to spoon into your cup of hot water - and that can be very nasty indeed - the cheapest of supermarket instants and stale to boot. Even worse is a cup of hot milk with the aforementioned instant. It's enough to send anyone who takes their coffee seriously into a decline, and you'll certainly be suffering withdrawal symptoms before you leave Chile. Hotels and smart cafes in bigger towns may be able to serve you an espresso, but if you're looking for your fix in a smaller or out-of-the-way place this is probably as good as it is going to get. by marsistanbul "What do we leave behind when we cross a frontier?? Each moment seems split in two; MELANCHOLY for what's left behind and EXCITEMENT a new land."(CHE..diarios de motocicleta) It is a long flight to Santiago de Chile from Istanbul...4 hours to Madrid and a long waiting for the connection or delays of Air Iberia's...And an other long hours to Santiago..13-14 hours..Not important to such a long flight.I did several times to China.. But,I asked to myself, when I was in side of aircraft..What am I doing here..Why?? I suddenly forgot that she is my dream country.I planned to go there years years before.. Ok,read your book and listen yr musics and be a good boy... I landed to airport and excitement just started..very warm well come...All family members of my dear friend's are there...Excitement..exactly... I stayed there more than 3 weeks and I'm in Istanbul...If you follow my Chilean pages.maybe you can understand that what I had.. When I be here,I told to myself that CHE was right..totally.."MELANCHOLY" for what's left behind...and what about "excitement"...being to be your home..Absolutely nothing:) I told to my friend Matty that maybe my body is here but my mind and soul still there and it is quite difficult to be re-united till I go there again... I decided to make the one hour walk to the cascades on foot ..It was a perfect morning. The journey was in a forested area along a small river.. Everything seemed right!! I started in a great mood humming a favorite tune...Bzzzzzzzzz ! the first enemy attacked and missed passing angrily almost through my hair... I ignored it and went on.. Another attack came from both sides this time. I was alarmed by the size and the ugly heavy buzzing. In no time the whole swarm had been called for help. I was worried this time but kept calm. I thought that time I was the prey. They wanted ..to suck MY BLOOD!! I hid behind some bushes although I thought it was a silly idea since insects can smell you... But it worked !!! They went away! Not for long though, for as soon as I started walking again a bigger and angrier swarm attacked. The brave ones took some bites wherever they could..The rest were buzzing in a frightening angry circle around me. I started waving a small branch around, looking like a performing clown from afar..But the flying cloud was so persistent that I had to give up after a brave battle..! I hid behind the bushes again looking desperately for a passing car. Well, the people in the car were great and I arrived safely but their marks were left on my poor legs for 3-4 days... Tabanos are big flies like horseflies. They like humid places and their bites are painful and live a red itching spot for a few days. In rare cases it can cause an infection. As I learned later it is the females that are fed with blood! The poor males are harmless vegetarians who spend their short life -until they mate- grazing peacefully and happily !!! It is said that tabanos stay away from moving objects and that they are attracted by dark clothes. Both wrong!! They don't make any discriminations of this kind. They attack anything they can eat and they are furious!!! It was the end of February in Lake district. Beware !!

They like meat by kyoub If you are a vegetarian, like I am, then you may have a bit of a problem eating in Chile. Like all South American countries they do like their meat here. Dishes that you wouldn't dream would have meat in it, does. If you eat fish then you can probably get by with that if it isn't fried. They do have good fruit, chocolates, and wine so what's the problem, right? Leave a Comment
