Avoid Budget rent a car Chile (Tattersal Leasing)

by eladn

I got a battered Suzuki Grand Vitara with 85000KM (!) - compared to 5k-12k cars I got in Argentina. After driving for 30 minutes I realized the A/C is dead, returned and they fixed it. Later I realized high beam doesn't work either. Two mornings after, it turned out the A/C was faulty again. I went to the Iquique office, got the same story (no replacement car, wait for it to be fixed again), we agreed to replace the car in Calama.I got there, and the car was not ready - they did not get the replacement tires. They suggested to take 2 tires from the existing car (The new car was 71000km...). I asked the guy if he's sure the tires are ok, since he replaced only two - he told me yes. I left with the "new" vitara with 2 wheels from the "old" Vitara. After 300km the tire ruptured completely.I got back to Budget Calama, only to hear that they're going to charge me (!) for rupturing their old...

Pisco Sour

by tini58de

Pisco Sour is more or less one of Chile's national drinks and it sure is super delicious!BUT:It is dangerous, too!!! You can drink and drink and drink it and don't feel the effects right away.... sure enough you will the next morning!!!Plus: if you plan a longer bus ride right after having enjoyed a couple of pisco sours - it is not a good idea!! So be warned to either drink or drive/ride!!! ;-))Just in case you are interested in the recipe: here it is:Ingredients:3 parts Pisco 1 1/2 part Lemon juice 1-2 tblsp Sugar Ice Mixing instructions:Put all the ingredients in a mixer and shake well until ice is melted, then serve very cold in cocktail glass.Or buy yourself a bottle of Pisco Sour - it is already mixed and tastes VERY well, too!!!

Calama : Go away ! Rien a voir !

by Maillekeul

This city seems not to be poor, but there is nothing to see here and prices are very high, though the services have no specific quality !Don't even stay one night and go directly to San Pedro de Atacama...Cette ville n'a pas l'air d'etre pauvre, mais il n'y a vraiment rien a y voir et les prix sont tres eleves, malgre une qualite de service bien basse. Ne restez meme pas une nuit et allez directement a San Pedro de Atacama...

Freedom of speech - Liberte d'expression

by Maillekeul

As Pinochet fell down, freedom of speech took its place back in the everyday life (more or less...). But, as a metter of fact, it seems that every speech is allowed, even nasty ones... In the bookshops of Valparaiso, we have been really surprised to find books worshiping 3rd Reich or explaining the jewish threat among other books about Chilean cities...

Be careful if you hike solo

by DaveOrlando

I have to say that, from the airport workers to the park rangers to the bus drivers, the people were helpful and friendly. The only tips I can give here relate to hiking and camping at the park. Since the park is so big and many parts cannot be accessed by vehicles, you should not stray too far from the beaten path or you may never be found if you have an accident. When you arrive at the park, you have to sign in and the rangers document your plan and length of stay. In 5 days of hiking in the park it was sometimes a half-day without seeing even one other person (this is on the trail). Not once did I see a ranger inside the park, so if something does go wrong don't plan to be rescued quickly -- especially if you didn't give the rangers good information (leave information with friends/family back home as well). The good news is that there are no bears and no snakes in the park. The only...

pick pocketing

by McCallister

The main street in Santiago is O'Higgins Blvd and even though it is wide and the sidewalks wide, it has pick pockets and you must be on the alert. they tend to work in pairs and have one distract you by asking the time while the other atempts to pick your pocket from behind

Smog Alert!

by Ames24

If you have problems associated with Asthma or have high sensitivities to stuff in the air, take care in Santiago, some days the smog can be really really bad. At the end of they day when you blow your nose you will find it unpleasant! I know that in the past they have even had times when they have had people go about covering their noses.

Santiago City Layout can be confusing

by Ames24

If you are from the northern hemisphere, and you go to Chile, you will notice that the sun goes around the other side of the sky/or close overhead. Also, Santiago is surrounded by mountains. Plus, one of the most major freeways in the city is actually an 80-km (i think it was km) more or less ring that goes around the city within the city. So all those factors can make it easy to lose your sense of direction. It might also have been my mode of transportation (in a group in a van going fast). In any case, bring/ acquaint yourself with a Santiago city map.

Be careful with your wallet,...

by Saldi

Be careful with your wallet, some places in Downtown Santiago are not too safe for foreginers and there's some place like Paseo Ahumada in Santiago Centro where you have to be aware of pickpockets (well, like every big city). But it's a quite city, don't be afraid.
