    Be wary

    Hotel Santa Clara

All of the warnings listed on my Colombia page also apply in Cartagena.

However, this town is one of the safest in the country and even walking around the old city at night by yourself (remember though that I'm a guy, I'm 6'2 and weigh over 200lbs!) is perfectly safe.

Cartagena it's a romantic place at night. Most of the people like to walk along the avenue by the beach. If you want to enjoy your walk, we recomend that you always go with your family, your friends or a guide. If you get lost, go inmediatly to find a policeman, he can give you help anytime.

Be VERY careful when you choose a travel agent to buy tours from. My father, his wife and his friend got ambushed during a tour!!! Apparently it is not the first time something like this happens during a tour sold by LOS PINOS ECOTRAVEL. 5 men wearing ski masks jumped into the water, surrounding the boat, they had machetes and stole a considerable ammount of valuables. Fortunately nobody got physically hurt.
What's worse is that the owner of the agency (Mr. Jaramillo) is shirking all responsibility, it seems that his company has no insurance.
The press picked it up - here is the article.
